Another Winch Debate...UPDATE...Bought an 8274

On flat land (read: mud) line speed doesn't matter. But the steeper the obstical the more line speed, esp no load line speed matters. When you are on a wet and clay slickened obstical it may not be safe to stop, unhook and spool in the cable. Or, even though you made it past the spot you needed to be winched through, stopping will get you stuck again. A fast winch will allow you to keep making forward progress w/o driving over the cable. Last, if you are relying on the wich for stability if it can't keep up you'll likely end up on you side, or worse. Grimreaper (Eric) has a good story about an 8274 keeping him shiney (revelatively speeking) side up. These are my experiences living in the South so YMMV.

This is basically the same thing I was going to post.

I've been on trails where you had to climb a long grade that requires at least one full winch pull (full length of cable) or maybe even two pulls. Of course during that total length there are short sections where the vehicle has enough traction to move on it's own.......a really slow winch makes it difficult to keep from slacking the cable or even running over it, plus it just takes forever to get the vehicles up to the top.

Just for thoses not in the know, running over a winch cable (or a snach strap) is very bad. Things will begin to break quickly.

hehe, or get wrapped around an axle and create a birds nest that only a bolt cutter can deal with... ;)

why would you want cable if you could have syn. line?
me personally , i would much prefer to have syn. line, lighter, just as strong and safer!!

nice score, not a bad price not as good as mine but not bad.

a buddy of mine just got me a FREE 8274, that was sitting in the back of a truck that was going to get scraped, looks ok, gunna see if it works soon

#1. I can pick this one up much cheaper than it can be shipped. (this one will cost me right around $590 whereas the one with synthetic line would have ended up being in the neighborhood of $870)
#2. Synthetic needs to be protected constantly (watch UA 2004 and the Gilbert Off-Road Park) and renders the first layer of rope useless. (although I have heard about some new stuff that deals better with heat)
#3. While the safety criticism is valid, if the proper precautions and safety standards are observed, nobody will get hurt either way.

I think overall it was a good buy and a fair price. I was going to pick one up that needed to be rebuilt, but Z3PR hyperlinked this one and I have more money than time at the moment.

Mikey you just make sure he doesn't send you that bumper because I won it for a whole 36.00 :D Going to trash the ends and just use the center with a rock hoop.

I was thinking about scoring the bumper and doing the exact same thing but I've got some plate sitting around here that I'm gonna make something up with. below is a pic of what what white-rhyno did with a warn center section. Congrats on the score, just make sure he doesn't send you the winch. :p:

This is not an issue with either of the winchs we are discussing. It only applies to those with the break in the drum, ie planetary. No break in the drum=no heat in the drum.

You're quite right, I should have been more clear. The heat wouldn't be an issue for me but could be for a majority of people out there.
