Its time to get serious about anti theft. My K5 is fully drivable and about done. What do I do about theft? Who is doing what? Not a big alarm fan either. Thanks

If you're really worried you can have someone install a ravelco system.

I just put a manual trans in mine and three transfer case shifters. And another secret one that nobody knows about.

Concur on the column guard above. There were some made that could be riveted together that did the same thing, just no need to keep removing/installing it, would probably be handier for a vehicle more frequently driven. That is THE #1 way GM cars/trucks of this vintage were and are stolen...they break the column in that area. Those guards can be defeated, as can any anti-theft, but it will take time and effort, and cannot be done with easily carried tools. The column guard HOPEFULLY is a visual deterrent (no broken window in the first place) and stops those with a hammer from getting the truck.

The second one I feel is pretty foolproof, but more difficult to deal with frequently. Just swap one of the critical fuses with a blown one.

*Personally* I'm not a fan of anything that messes with wiring, as I see it as a potential failure point to leave me stranded, or at best guessing why the vehicle just died or won't start. Should be pretty foolproof to install correctly and not have issues, but that is not generally my luck.

What does the column lock do? Just prevent them from breaking the plastic and getting to the switch rod?

covers the whole dicast shifter / key area to slow down and prevent damage and theft .

my truck will be 3 shifter levers on the floor and hidden kill switch for the fuel pump .
my other truck has 6 levers on the floor .

Starting them by breaking that area works...
but a big flat blade screwdriver jammed in the ignition, few taps of a set of channys and then a good crank on the screwdriver with said channys will start em up and unlock the wheel in about 30 seconds...
Or a small slide hammer to pull the tumbler out and a screwdriver to turn it over with. Same result.

Best way is the hidden kill switch. I prefer in the power to coil, so that if they Do get in, and get it to turn over they just think it won't start and give up. Plus the cranking draws attention.
If it won't even turn over, a hidden switch is the first thing a competent thief will look for.

Wasn't always a responsible citizen... I knew some people that did bad things.

I know someone who rigged a car coil to the steering colum,so unless whoever tried starting the truck knew where the hidden switch was to turn off the power to the coil--they would get zapped with 20,000 volts thru the ignition key as soon as they cranked it..
He lived in a ghetto neighborhood, had his vehicles stolen and broken into many times till he did that little modification.
.
Cant do this on any computer equipped vehicle though..the ECM may blow up,or at least the fuse to it might pop..but then it wont start ,so that acts as an anti-theft device in itself..taking the ECM fuse out is another trick some guys used..

You can't access the tumbler with the column guard on, at least not the removable one.

ah. I've seen ones that just go on and the tumblers right there. It just covered the plastic and cast area. Never seen the removeable one. The one in the link looks like the exposed tumbler one

For daily use, I’ve got a fuel pump kill. For longer term, I use a hidden blue sea switch to cut battery power.

I plan to add a compustar alarm. I’d like to get my locks, windows, and starter to be remote controllable. The two way paging range is ridiculous these days. I likely won’t get the gps tracking feature, though.

That style covers the tumbler. Openings are for the tilt lever and turn signal stalk. Other side is blank.

For some reason this link won't open on this computer, but it appears to be similar idea, but one I've not heard of before: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiT8tqewJDdAhUB26wKHc1bCCsQFjAAegQIKBAB&url=http://www.lok-itt.com/models/300.html&usg=AOvVaw3upQn9g0vzEspNza8M2S1m From what I can tell, they also make one that is not removable. But if the tumbler is exposed, bad idea IMO.

If you are going to do some kill switch wiring, why not take the time to wire in a horn and attach it to the S wire. Control the ground with a switch or even your brake light normally closed switch. Just spitballing...

oh i like this idea .

do a 2 way switch . 1 way the coil works . the other way coil is dead and power goes to a horn .

Wait...some people worry about vehicle theft? :screwy:

I have a worthless vehicle with an engine that is famously difficult to start, and a third pedal with no clutch safety switch.

If someone tries to steal my vehicle, it'll lurch forward when he tries cranking it, and it'll crank for hours without starting if you don't know the starting sequence. Plus it's noisy. So I'd be fairly impressed if a random thief successfully drove it away under its own power.
