To get at the back of my ash tray I flipped it open all the way instead of completely removing it. The first thing that holds ash trays in place is a couple of steel tabs. Those steel tabs can be bent out of the way by just pushing down on the ash tray. One of the problems is when you do that the steel tabs may break off. One of my steel tabs broke off, and I fixed it by sliding a sheet metal "speed nut" into the area that the steel tab broke off with a short screw in it. Another problem that will arise is when the ash tray is at its full extended position the retaining springs will fall out of their slot. You will have to put them back into their slot while starting to put tension back onto them...that is a lot of fun for fat fingers as well.
