Any tips on carrier set up w/out old shims???

I always thin my yellow marking compound with some drops of gear oil. Make it more like syrup instead of grease. Also make sure you have resistance on the ring gear when you spin the pinion back and forth. Those two things will give you a nice clear pattern to look at.

If I am correct, and I may have forgotten, I believe that you need to bring the pinion closer to the carrier, then reset for backlash. I didn't state that correctly earlier.
That should get the pattern deeper into the ring gear teeth once you get the backlash correct. If I remember correctly. I will have to go look at my book in a minute.

Add shims pinion needs to be closer. Make a big change like say .025 or even .030.

The bottom slinger isn't " needed" but it does help keep oil up in the pinion bearings and can prevent oil starvation to said bearings. Most low pinion applications are fine with out it.

Ok, so now @elks has it here. I feel like the pinion is a little too close now. The flattened area of the pattern is down into the teeth too much, IMO.
What's the consensus?
