Any way to ID 28 or 30 spline without tearing down?

No, I'm going completely different.
I've already converted my front 10 bolt to Hummer H3 4 piston calipers with slip over disks and 14mm lugs. I'm swapping my 10 bolt rear to a 2004 8.6 10 bolt with disks also.

My axles are 3.73 and I think the rear is a G80 Gov lock. I'm not sure of the time frame. The axle is on the way. Right now I'm confirming exactly what needs done. I'll need some new spring mounts, but hopefully everything else is straight forward. I suspect it will be for the most part.

Don't mean to jack the thread but hey Cyclic, do you have a build thread somewhere that shows what all was involved to swap the newer H3 front end parts and real axle? I have a wrecked '00 Yukon with 4 wheel disc that I bought to swap drive trains and was curious about swapping the rear axle and front brakes like you're doing... I hate to see anything go to waste lol.

The thread is here............... http://coloradok5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=316597

Basically covers the front brake swap onto a front 10 bolt. Almost all H3 parts.
The rear will go there as I get work done, but right now the weather is kicking me in the gut.
Your Yukon should be a GMT800 and the axle should work with a spring pad swap/relocation. If it has coils in the rear you have an early GMT900, will be more work but should also work nicely. If you plan to use the entire drive train, I'd actually suggest finding a 99 up dodge dana 44 front axle. 99+ Silverado hubs will bolt into the dana 44 giving you a drivers side six lug 44 which will match nicely with the drive train you have.

Just wondering if you've pulled that 3.73. rear yet....I still haven't gotten around to repairing mine..

You know the weather we've been having, not much luck with getting any welding done as I have to work in the driveway.

Yeah I hear ya...I haven't even had a chance to tear into my axle to see if the shafts are 28 or 30, or what is really up with it. Been working on the wife's car (brakes and vibes), and when I DO have a free weekend, Monsoons...and again this weekend. Grr.

I went so far as to get a quote from 4WheelParts to have THEM do a gear swap etc, since I can't ever seem to get the time or weather.

Bet that was an arm and a leg. Hopefully, I'll get a little advantage soon, I'm getting a slab put behind the house for a spouse parking area. Will leave me able to put the suburban at the garage and pull it apart without the need to move it EVERY evening for the wife. Getting the price quote today and already have the cash to do it.

Once mine is swapped, I can even deliver it to you in Austin in my trailer.

That would be pretty awesome... Not sure we ever talked about how much $$. If you want to work that out, we can pm. Hope you can get your slab poured soon  I have a 2x yr camp out I just don't miss coming up late April... Keep me posted. Incidentally, what kind of miles do you reckon are on that rear?

Yeah to have 4WP do ring & pinion with new bearings was going to be ~800...if they would have to repair/replace the open carrier and spiders it would be ~1100....and that's just doing the REAR. it's ~450 labor on that rear.

That's way more labor than what they are quoting you....

I hear you... K5 won't really fit too well in my garage, and the driveway is at least a 10% grade. Always end up chasing sockets and other round bits down the hill :D.

When I'm working on stuff that requires setting the rear on stands, I have to back it in up to the place where the slope mitigates, then really carefully wheel-chock the fronts, put it in 4wd and park, and lock the hubs for a little extra margin of safety. :yikes:

What I wouldn't give for a shop, or at LEAST a flat, level slab.

BOOM, concrete guy came over today. They start the digging tomorrow! Should go quickly, we'll see. I know I can't park immediately on it, but I'm so much closer to working space!

I'm pretty certain I can have my rear axle pulled by early/mid April. It has 3.73 gears and a G80 locker, the JB5 6400lb brakes, right at 93,000 original miles. It should drop right into your K5 in a single day with some new u bolts.

That's pretty awesome. Mine is also the JB5 brakes, but open diff...so that is at least an upgrade.

My thought is that rather than blow $,$$$$.$$ on building the front and rear both up, having to buy everything at once, I can ease into this and get her up and running. That way, I can try out 3.73's at a nominal cost (your axle) before i finally settle on doing front and back. If I think I want more or less ratio, I can decide THEN do the front. Pretty sure 3.73's are what I want but hey - it is a daily driver....AND I'll have my old one as a spare to boot.

So, not that it really matters to me at this point, but do you know either way if yours is 28 o 30 spline? :dunno:

...and hey we have an auto tech teacher where I work that is ex mil and into military versions. He's got a couple of Diesel blazers and a Diesel 'burb. I told him about your H3 conversions today and his eyes lit up and an evil grin came over his face

Not without pulling an axle.
I will say, so long as you don't go over 33" tires, the 3.73's pull my suburban around pretty good. I'm currently on 32's and even without doing a tune up, it gets down the road nicely.
I'll send you an IM here in a moment for the price, you will be MORE than happy.

Well, here's what zero splines look like in a suburban

I wonder where this will end up?

IM on the way.

So I determined that your former axle has 28 spline shafts...

That replacement shaft on the right side was stamped 4310000-r (or 1 ?)

Googled it, found....

I want to give kudo's to Cyclic...

:thumb: He delivered me a seemingly perfectly working axle for a great price. The brakes even look good on it. I wouldn't hesitate to do some horse-trading with him again. Thanks again, Cyclic, I had a blast talking with you today.

CYCLIC, Is the track width the same on that axle you got from a 2004?

Beebob- Nope, it's perfect. The stock axle is 64" and the 2004 is 68" wide. So I can skip the wheel spacers AND my suburban will be more stable with the wider axle.

aandpman- you go all crazy and get that axle swap out started yet?

Friday is the target date. The blazer will die Friday and hopefully be resurrected by Sunday. How appropriate :D

Just to make you a little jealous, my new slab.................

The Beast in IN! :waytogo:

The only hitch I had was the RH wheel cylinder. I never could get it to bleed, so I swapped in my old one. Otherwise she went in like she was meant to be there....

...I already took it down and got it inspected so I can renew the registration, which is due this month. :woot:

The gear lube level was pretty much dead on, and it was still good color.

New speedo cable and gears are on the way. Just need to get a new bushing and seal for the tc tail housing. It's def 3.73 ratio. GPS says 60 and the speedo reads 72.
:D

Love your slab, btw.

Excellent, glad to hear it. Does it feel like more power with the lower gears?

Yep, slab came out VERY nice. All the steel for the car port part is ordered. Delivery set for after my big 3 gun this month the 27th or 28th. I'm so ready to put my axle in but this weekend is full up with family "stuff".
