Anybody drive a squarebodied 3-on-the-tree?

The main problem I always had with the column shifters was that when the little plastic pieces in the sleeve wore out, it was unrepairable unless you replaced everything. Plastic and metal.
And they never had the parts you needed.
Mine got worn to the point that you could remove the entire shifter while driving. Made for an interesting anti-theft device, not that anyone would have taken it.

It was replaced by a cheap Hurst 3 on the floor which was cheaper than a used steering column.

That's what happened to our old '64 wagon. The shifter could be removed and the car became very difficult to steal. :haha:

Not that many thieves would have remembered how to operate the shifter anyways...

My 82 GMC had a nice tight colum shifter for the Th400 when I first got it..after shifting it twenty million times plowing the past 11 years ,its now sloppy enough that I can pull the little pin out that holds the shift lever into the colum!...sometimes I take the shifter off and put it in the glove box ,if I'm in a dicey area where someone might get the urge to take it on one last joyride..
I wonder if that will qualify for the 10% anti-theft discount on my insurance?..

Somehow I don't think the insurance company will see things that way...

Hey everyone, sorry to bump this 8+ year old thread. I have been looking everywhere for the model number or part number of GM 3-on-the-tree transmissions. Does anyone know what it was?

"4 on the floor" = SM465
"3 on the tree" = ????
