Anybody ever made their own axle

Yea I guess or you could buy new, I'd prolly get the matching Reid knuckles personally.

I mean all this really isn't the most budget friendly but it's not completely out of the realm of reason. I mean what's a single wheel Dana 60 going for now days 800-1500 if you can find one, atleast in my neck of the woods lol

Sure, but the hub parts will double the price you threw out before. And that doesn't count good shafts/joints, locker, etc.

If you're going to go to all that aftermarket stuff anyway, there's good argument for building an axle like this. If you'd be of with stock c's, stock knuckles, etc, a junkyard axle is several thousand cheaper.

Yea I mean I understand all that ends up cost a lot more but it's still not completely unrealistic, if you're buying junkyard stuff and upgrading shafts locker hubs etc... It's really not gonna end up costing a whole lot more to build a custom front end, unless you find a good deal on a 60 housing

Im building a front axle. Buying parts one piece at a time. Only OEM part is the ring and pinion and bearings. Everything else is aftermarket or custom made. About $5000 in parts sitting here and thats not half of what it needs to be finished.

Parts collected so far:
Dana 80 Arb, EDM cut and bored to 40 spline
47 spline stubs
billet 4340 2.5 ton spindles
Ouverson big knuckles
Dynatrac Pro rock 80 center
NOS Dana Spicer 4.30 ring and pinion

Still need:
4" 4340 tubes
inner tube seals or outer seals, not sure yet
diff bearing kit
1480 yoke
CTM one piece 300m 40 spline inner shafts
CTM or OEM 300m axle joints, not sure yet
Ouverson aluminum super 8 bearing hubs
47 spline drive flanges
wheel bearings, spindle nut kit
Ouverson disc brakes and billet 6 piston calipers or lighter Wilwood stuff
Ouverson double shear billet steering arms, not sure of the offset and spacing yet
Howe steering ram

A porta power, lathe and alignment bar are nice to have if you do alot of custom housing work

And you dont have a thread on this why :dunno: :D

Once I get all the parts ill start a thread. Not much to see right now. Maybe by the end of the year it will be closer.

Yea I've watched a lot of the KOH stuff, those guys are rough on their stuff.

Hmmph I didn't realize anything came with 4" tubes, I thought they were all 3.5" or something like that

Lots of Dodge and Fords used 4" tube D70's and D80's, even straight axle Chevy's did under dually trucks in the 70's/80's. Bigger tubes for more load capacity I guess, even though the D70 was lighter duty in every other way (compared to the 14 bolt)

Dang I need to brush up on my axle tech, I've been focusing on everything LS this LS that I've forgotten some axle stuff lol

I'm not gonna lie, talking about building custom axles is about to put a big dent in my bank account

I saw a guy somewhere that filled the housing with charcoal brickets to get it hot enough to get the tubes out. @bent72 recently did a HP44 ford to chevy retube. I have a spare 14 bff I would like to build into a front axle for my blazer.

I have read that the charcoal adds extra carbon to the cast iron and makes it more prone to cracks and breaking. Not sure if it is true. Gas bbq would probably be better. I use a propane weed burner torch to heat up big parts.
