I'm looking at buying the wife a 2002-2004 Odyssey. Anything specific I should look for? Any known issues? Does the timing belt need to be replaced at 100k miles and it'll run you $2000 for parts and labor or anything like that? TIA :waytogo:

I don't own an Odyssey but have mostly owned Honda/Acura's for most of my life.

The timming belt should be replaced at about 100k, otherwise you take the risk of breaking it and bending your valves. This is about a $400-$600 job depending on where you take it. I would highly recommend replacing the water pump at the same time. If you do the work yourself its about $30 for the belt and $100 for the water pump, fairly easy job.

Head gasket also usually starts to go at about 150k-190k miles. $20 part $300-$400 in labor depending on where you go.

Other then that ensure you keep up with your oil changes and you will enjoy years of trouble free ownership. My daily driver is a 94 accord with 208k miles and it still runs like new.

Those Odyssey's (we call 'em oddities in the shop) are about the only Honda I've ever seen in the shop that needs transmissions fairly regularly. Whether it's a grandma, soccer mom, or dad driving it daily, the auto transmissions bomb around 100k.

Every other Honda we've ever had with internal problems usually had ALOT of miles, or was abused by someone making it a "rice rocket". But these Odysseys are like Dodge/Chrysler FWD transmissions or a Ford AXOD/AX4N FWD trans... Junk and a burnt pile of fluid and clutches waiting to happen.

Are the four speeds or five speeds worse for reliability? Any years worse or better?
