Heya.

I bought an engine that was a pull out of an 86 blazer for my 85 sub, so I can limp it to california.

I just checked the casting numbers now that its home and now that I have my 85 sub engine ready to come out and it's a mid 90s Mr goodwrench crate engine.

I think those casting numbers will be covered by the dipstick/pushed up against the firewall to pass at an inspection station.

Anything I need to know before I do the swap? Anything that wont line up to my 700r4 or any problem I may run in to?

I have 3 people at my house helping, so I havent searched the internet yet, this is just me hoping to catch some one who is knowledgeable online right now

From what I know everything should line up fine, you run a risk of smog busting on you but I don’t know what they’d do exactly in your situation.

It's been a while since I've been into a small block, but I think 85 was the last year of the 2 piece rear main seal and 86 the first of the 1 piece. I was thinking they used different flywheels/flywheel bolt patterns, but won't swear to it. Of course, with it being a crate, this all may be a moot point. Just something to check.

Well, we put a hold on it till tomorrow morning.

thanks for the replies.

Going to hopefully make it work tomorrow.

The engine is 96-99 casting number.

I ran into that when I put a 1986 305 from a G-10 van in my '79 C10 I had back then,the flexplate was different,but I had the one that came on the 305,luckily..
That year was a weird one for small blocks--they started using the one piece rear main, and the alternator had a serpentine belt, while the P/S still used a v-belt..I "think" they started making the blocks roller cam ready then too,but I never had the intake off to see for sure..

If the suburban is already registered in California and your just worried about when its time to smog it your fine,

I believe you have to meet the most recent emissions standards for the pieces you’re using. i.e. if using a 96 engine, you have to meet those emissions standards, but not sure how it applies to replacement (crate) engines.

Yeah it won’t matter. As long as you have all of the 85 smog equipment installed correctly on the later engine, it won’t be an issue.
