I did a quick search, but as you can imagine, "run stand" returns a whole lot of results. :eek1:

obviously it should be simple enough to do, but if someone already has plans and pics, why not pick their brain? :pimp:

does an old tire, a garden hose and a booster pack count? :haha:

I built one when I was racing roundy round stuff.

Pretty simple had a starter switch a radiator and electric fan, oil pressure and temp guage ( both mechanical) that was about it

I used my frame, but just as easily could weld up a stand to match the engine mounts with a midplate support...A battery on the side, a radiator, and a few guages, with a fuel can to suck gas from.

Heres a better overall pic(video) of what I had put together to fire the engine:

I built one 2 years ago and had the necessary wires only needed to run, now I want it a little more refined. And add permanent gauge and wires. Even 2 different temp gauges. Now want to add alternator wiring so it will charge the batt while it runs.

Eventualy Id like to build another stand that would bolt behind it to run transmissions on.

I'll shoot pictures later. The one I built 2 years ago has room to add. a steering box so I can test boxes and pumps. I think evolving the stand will allow me to.test more parts.

I just build my engines with the confidence they will start and run properly once installed in the truck...:dunno:

Ha, I have no worries about the good ones but have built some real Crap before....and ain't afraid to admit it. For certain reasons if you care to learn. I have learned a lot of BS from doing things your "NOT" supposed to do. You would be surprised.

Also the fact between 2011-2012 I'll prob have my hands on 15 rebuilds. And I like to give to the customers a ready to install engine.

plenty of reasons/opportunities to run a mill on a stand/tire without having "built" it, at least around a marina... I light a couple a yr off usually, open flywheel spinning, sitting in a tire... :haha:

Greg72 built a real nice one recently. Either wait until he makes his way in here or PM him.

I've broken cams in with the engine on a couple blocks of wood with the radiator sitting on the floor in front of it and an electric box fan in front of that. No elaborate stand necessary unless this is going to be a regular occurance.

I gave my brother a crossmember out of a 71 K10 I parted out to use as the main support for a engine test stand...they unbolt easily and have the mounts in the right place for any Chevy inline or V8 enginewith the usual bellhousing...he used gauges on a panel to monitor oil pressure, etc, but could have just as easily used the dash cluster from the same truck!--it even had a hand choke !..

We ran many Chevy engines at the junkyard that were already pulled from vehicles by bolting a hunk of 4x4 wood posts to the clamshell motor mount brackets,to prop them up off the ground enough...it was a bit dicey though, one engine with a tranny still attached flipped about 3 times when we tried revving it up,it started to stall, stumbled, then took off suddenly, the torque flipped it right over!..we nailed the 4x4 posts to a wide pallet after that to keep that from happening again...
Some yards just let the engine hang from a chain on the loader forks and start them up,thats really scary!..

I like the idea of using that as a base to build a stand around! good call.

truth be told, that was what got me thinking about this in the first place. not much detail in his thread about it though, so I'm hoping he'll chime in here with a few more pics of it. :D
@63chevyII yeah, I'm thinking something simple at first, but then build on extra stuff over time. eventually being able to bolt on a transmission would be a plus as well.

what I'm really wanting to do is get my hands on a 5.3 or 6.0, but get it all setup to run before I tear down my '72.

right now I'm debating between wood and metal as a building material. I think in the long run, I'd prefer metal, but I don't own a welder (yet), and haven't welded anything since high school, so wood seems more attractive atm.

not much detail in his thread about it though
hmmm, I don't know what I was thinking when I said that... I went back through his thread and found the page where he talked about it (post #1121 bookmarked now) and actually there is a lot of detail. good place to start at least.

I say build it out of steel and learn how to weld all over again. Cool thing with steel is you can use all.kinds of different scrap metal.

I built mine all outa scrap for the most part. And used a chevy bell housing to hold the back in place.

yup, not a ton to em.. angle iron, square tube, whatever ya got laying around... if I was set up with a killer shop at home with plenty of room, and some time, I certainly wouldn't mind having one.... but there are other homemade projects I would do first, sweet welding/fab table, press brake, etc...

Some pics of mine.
I use circle track engine mounts for ease of access. Picked them up at a swap meet for $3.00.

I wanted a lot of room in the front in case I ever want to mount and run with factory fan and wanted plenty of room for mounting WP and the stuff.

Radiator and hoses from random years chevy trucks.

The rear I use 2 large C clamps to.hold the back down.

I didn't want to.make it small block chevy specific, although that's the majority of engines I do.

And one more, its a work in progress and hope to have finished my end of January.

I just threw a bunch of Crap on the.bottom but wanted to have room to throw a drain pan anywhere.
