I'm gonna defang my truck, and I was thinking about cutting the outer edges off the bumper at the curves (black lines) anyone done this.. Possibly going to paint it black afterwards, and weld up some d shackles to it. Anyone done anything similar/ or made their factory bumper look better?

I think its going to look like....you cut the factory bumper. I'd leave it uncut, then paint, add shackles, etc.

Probably wouldn't look too good if you cut the stock one and left it flat on the ends. Maybe if you put an angle on it, or section some of the width and re-attach the stock ends. I plan on doing that with my rear one.

and weld up some d shackles to it.

Bad idea. The thin metal of the stock bumper is no where near strong enough to pull from. If you can't get a proper heavy duty bumper from ORD or DIY4X, get a set of CUCV shackle hangers that bolt to the frame and cut the hole in the stock bumper for them to go through.

And if you want to cut/trim the stock bumper, measure 1.5"-2" outside of the upper/outer bumper bolt and diagonally to the lower/outer bumper bolt (look at your pic and you will see) and cut that portion off.

I customized my bumpers, I went to the Rubicon and after I was done they looked nothing like stock bumpers.:haha::haha::haha:

The only good mods I've seen are to cut out holes for the CUCV-style tow points and to cut out a fairlead section and hide a winch behind it. Search for hidden winch.

cut up bumper

my buddy has a cut up front bumper on the back of his truck, doesn't look to bad, as for the front I junked mine and built something else

I trimmed 4 inches out of the front and rear bumpers to make them tighter to the body, cut the corners off in a flat section then took 2" from each side and then weld the corners back on and smooth off the welds.
yes its thin metal, just do small welds and spred the heat, remember to take your time and all will be good

i modified my bumper. i defanged the fenders also.

This looks cool, but really, the bumper Isn't very strong to begin with, and you have removed a good part of its structure. Hasn't this significantly weakened the bumper?

My step dad welded studs to the back instead of bumper bolts, the whole front of his bumper is smooth. Looks really good.

I did the same thing as blowder did to his but on a early bumper, it actually looked really nice.

If you use the bulges in the bumper as lines to cut on the early bumpers don't take as much off, I tapered it down towards where it mounted to the frame too.

found some pics

wow I really like that, hadnt thought of cutting it that much, I may have to get a spare bumper from a scrap yard..I wasnt planning on actually pulling from the d shackles, they were just a thought.. What front bumpers will mount up to my 91 blazer??

You could bend some tube to put behind the bumper and strengthen it. But if you have a bender and welder anyway...

some square tube would work good in that case i would think.. some 2 x 2 x 1/4" wall would probably fit well behind that..
