ok, so I'm trying to acquire another blazer(gotta be a diesel with the gas prices) to fill this void I've been dealing with and I came across this "84"m1009 cucv in need of a good amount of help and the guy says he that he bought it from the forest service 4yrs ago and never registered it ( yeah I know the troubles that can be had from that with the last cucv I dropped coin on) and that all it needs is a bill of sale. So with that said I asked him for the vin# so I could get with the local dmv and see what problems could arise and he gave me this- vin # 1G8ED1816FF196196 witch doesnt fit the blazer the way it should

Specifically for CUCV's, these positions can have the following values:

1st = 1 (United States)

2nd = G (General Motors)

3rd = 8 (Chevrolet Truck, Multipurpose Vehicle) <-- M1009
-OR-
3rd = C (Chevrolet Truck, Complete Vehicle) <-- M1008/M1008A1/M1010/M1028
-OR-
3rd = B (Chevrolet Truck, Incomplete Vehicle) <-- M1031 cab/chassis

4th = E (6001-7000 lbs GVW) <-- M1009
-OR-
4th = G (8001-9000 lbs GVW) <-- M1008/M1008A1
-OR-
4th = H (9001-10000 lbs GVW) <-- M1010/M1028/M1031

5th = D (Military Truck 4x4)

6th = 1 (10) <-- M1009
-OR-
6th = 3 (30) <-- M1008/M1008A1/M1010/M1028/M1031

7th = 4 (2 Door Cab) <-- M1008/M1008A1/M1010/M1028/M1031
-OR-
7th = 8 (Utility - Blazer) <-- M1009

8th = J (8-379 cid / 6.2L diesel)

9th = check digit

10th = D (1983) (Rare, if any except prototypes)
-OR-
10th = E (1984)
-OR-
10th = F (1985)
-OR-
10th = G (1986)
-OR-
10th = H (1987)

11th = F (Flint)

so I asked him to give me both #'s(dash & dr door #'s) so I guess the Q I have is should I forget about it and run or is there someway around this? I can buy abandoned trucks all day long for under $100

the 8th and 9th digit don't correspond to the normal vin system. The 8th digit could have been misread as a 1 instead of a J, but no easy way to explain the 9th digit being wrong.

it would definately take some more investigation. Might also ask for # on the glove box if that year had them. Also look for a metal plate under the hood, maybe on the core support or firewall

the 9th isnt the problem its the 8th(j= h.o. diesel witch thats the only motor the cucv's came with) and the 10th( swears its an 84 not an 85)

I just need a vin check so I give the dmv the correct one to make sure it can be registered - dont feel like wasting another 3k on a truck I cant even drive on the road, know what I mean?

so theirs no phone service for the registration office for a few weeks and dont have the time to drive over there with my work schedule.

know one seems to want to help me with a carfacts report eather so I guess this deals going down the drain

someone should posts some pics of their truck-lol

I'd go for J misread as 1 ... cuz the other option is a C, right, for diesels. Heck, my '74 had a 4 instead of an 8 for many years, even the DMV didn't care. (4 is pickup body, IIRC -- you'd think they'd notice!)

Anyway, if that's the case, note that a 1985 *model year* vehicle could have been *manufactured* in 1984, and many institutions and jurisdictions use the maunfacturing date ... so that would explain the discrepancy.

If we use 1G8ED18J6FF196196 (i.e. J instead of 1) we get

Country: USA
Model year: 1985
Made by: General Motors - Blazer/Jimmy
Drive: CUCV 4WD
Engine: 6.2L diesel V8
Series: 1/2 ton (10/15)
Body: Blazer/Jimmy
Plant: Flint
Serial #: 196196
GVWR: 6001-7000 hydraulic

Which all matches, save the year, as above. This is using my VIN decoder on http://brochures.slosh.com, fwiw. It doesn't compute the check digit, so I can't immediately verify the validity of the VIN.

You know, your insurance company can, though ... you might call them, ask for a quote on the vehicle, and give them the VIN with the 1 ... if their computer chokes on it, give them the VIN with the J.

One other thing about CUCV's is that mechanically, they're ALL 1984's ... my '85 M1009 had a 1984 wiper motor, for instance. Though the civvy trucks changed slightly in the mid-80's, the CUCV's stayed absolutely static, so that the Army didn't have to stock two kinds of parts ... and this can give you a headache until you remember to tell the parts counter people that it's an '84, even when it's not. :deal:
