Anyone done a 4x4 conversion on a van ?

Looks like they borrowed parts of a twin engined inboard boat to make that goofy setup!..

I see many Astro 4x4 GM vans for sale around here, but hardly any G series full sized older ones (even normal 2WD ones are getting scarce here now)...I have seen a Dodge Caravan that was a factory 4x4,it appeared all they did was add another PTO shaft to the transaxle and put two gear boxes at each rear wheel, and the rear axle looked like the typical "trailer" axle all of them used..

I wouldn't mind having an Astro 4x4 van,I no longer need a full sized van, never did like backing my G-10 up parking it (more often than not I'd hit something!)..but I know the Astro's suck to work on ,everything is stuffed in so tight and hidden any engine repairs are a real ballbuster..
My G-10 isn't too bad, most of the things you can get at by removing the dog house are a piece of cake--doing a water pump in it sucked though--I had put a rebuilt pump on the 307 I put in it so I wouldn't have to do it "in the vehicle" and it started to leak about 3 weeks later!...
I could swap a transmission in my G-10 in about an hour--the bell housing bolts can all be removed while your sitting in the front seats with the dog house off,and the cross member has two thru-bolts that are like pins, you just slide them out and you can lower the transmission with the cross member bottom half still in place, then swap it over to the replacement transmission and jack it back up and bolt it in..wish every vehicle was that easy..(and should be!)..

I have a 2001 GMC safari AWD. Its been great, my wife loves the thing. Its not horrible to work on, still has a nice removable doghouse. I picked up a factory service manual on Ebay. I put some nice LT all season tires on it and it really goes well in the snow. Its not going wheeling though, way too low. I wish they still made them, took me a year to find a clean low mile one.

The one they built on "Fast & Loud" a few years back was almost identical to my van..trouble with that show,is they only show 30 seconds of actual "build" and the rest of it is mostly drama,BS and fantasy..I'd have liked to seen more details on how they actually did the conversion..

this guy had a build over on Pirate for the last couple years but the whole PhotoFucket debacle killed it. He called it "lunchbox"
IIRC it's a TBI 350/th350/np205. 14 Bolt with a flip kit, D60 w/crossover

That would be a perfect weekend camping/ bug out vehicle. It wouldn't even need to be that high.

I will be starting on these vans below, all will have Dana 60 fronts With divorced np205. I'm still looking for few parts of each to start the builds.

1. 1993 Chevy G30 15 passenger 5.7
2. 2001 Chevy Express 3500 15 passenger 8.1 liter
3 1995 GP30HD 32' motorhome 454 Dana 80 10lug.

Here are 3 conversion shops that I know of still doing Chevy & GMC van 4wd conversions.

Boulder off-road vans

Advanced 4x4 vans

Welding designs

Thanks

I have a 2004 Ford E350 4x4 extended van. It has the V10. Sometimes I wish it was a diesel. This is my first Ferd and so far it has been ok. I have studs on the original steel wheels (not pictured), and when you have studs on all four on this beast you can just leave the chains at home. My van is a Quigley conversion and I bought it new and already a 4x4.
Another way to put 4x4 in a van is to get the DIY system from U-Joint Off-road and do it yourself if you have the tools and skills.

I want to have Colorado Camper Vans put a low profile pop-up camper top on it some day.

This sure would be fun to do in the winter.

This one is still for sale for 1000 bucks on FB marketplace--its located nearly 100 miles away though, close to where my older brother lives..

I'd love to own it--its a near twin to my '81 G-10 ..1978 chevy van 4x4.jpg

Yes,especially up here--I think mine is one of maybe a dozen I've seen driving around here,in the past several years--most of those were hi-top conversion vans--probably pampered and garaged most of the year,or from a state where salt isn't used..they looked the same up until 1995 and you don't even see many 1990-95 ones left on the roads here..

The one pictured above was converted by someone, and the ad states they "dont know much about it,and have too many projects"...looks in decent condition, better than my van is..
