Anyone ever been crab fishing?

lots of them around here...

We are close to the atlantic ocean(15 miles away) so we can get salt ater crabs pretty easy..they come up on the beaches during low tide,if your fast enough they are not hard to catch...

The Taunton river flows thru my town,it eventually dumps into the ocean near Fall River MA...where the fresh water meets the salt water about 5 miles inland, its all marshy and kind of swampish...there are hundreds of Blue crabs and Fiddler crabs there all the time in good weather...I filled a 5 gallon bucket with them in about 15 minites--but a game warden saw us,and informed us they were not "in season",so he let us keep 2 and had to dump the pail out! :doah:  ...they didn't taste very good anyway!..

One guy who was fishing there said we were nuts to eat them, that they were probably full of pollution!--I asked him if he thought the fish he caught was any better, but he didn't answer me!...he called the crabs "cockroaches of the sea"--said all they do is eat dead stuff off the bottom, same with lobsters too!..I'm not too crazy about shellfish or clams,so despite living close to places I could go to catch them,I dont bother...A lot of EELS here too! :eek1: :eek1: --those things are NASTY looking!..look like they came from outer space!..

funny this came up.... the last week or 2 i've been checking with my fishing customers on how the fishings been this season...

to a man, they all said, very weak, but the crabs have been HUGE this year! funny they all mentioned the crabs... usually talkin bout stripers, fluke, etc...

i have one friend who is a crab junky.. takes a couple long weekends a year to go down to Maryland for all you can eat blueclaws...

Yeah we go crabbin all the time down by corpus and on mustang island. we have nets we just let off the end of pears that go out a few hundred yards. Our nets are barrel shapped with metal rings for top and bottom and net flat on the bottom and around the sides. Just tie bait to the middle of the bottom, and just tie a piece of twine to the top ring on two opposite sides. Then when you pull it up the sides come up and trap the crabs. We usually get some pretty good size ones depending on what time of year. pb measure anywhere between 15 and 25 inch spread for a good size typical crab.

Wtf kind of crab in Texas measure 15-25" anywhere on its body? The only crabs legal to keep are blue and stone. Blue's are by far the most common and with stone's you can only keep one claw. I ran a few crab traps in the brackish part of the Nueces river for about 5 years and the largest crab I ever caught was 11" by how they are legally measured (from tip to tip on the shells). I caught a few 10"ers but they were hardly common, the minimum size for blue's is 5" so I can say with all certainty if you caught ONE that was 15" across you better call the newspaper, the parks and wildlife department and the guiness book of records. I LOVE crab meat.

We had an empty lot on the Nueces River when I was a kid so I would have one crab trap in front of our place, and one across the river (the other side was a ranch and 100% undeveloped). The river was only 3-4' deep normaly so I could wade across with a bucket to the other side, but it got interesting when it was flooding and I had to go retrieve my trap before the water got high enough to wash it away. Good thing I have always been an extremely strong swimmer. On any given day I'd catch 2-10 crabs. I would take them home and boil them with Zatarans crab boil and a couple other secret ingredients, then pick the meat out and freeze it in a tupperwear container. When I had about a dozen crabs, which equaled about a pound, my mom would make crabcakes. I loved those damn things! I love eating them fresh too, but not every day.

Mmmmmm Crabby Patties.
Krabbby patties

8oz flaked crabmeat
1 egg
½-cup contadina or other flavored bread crumbs
½-cup grated parmesan reggiano cheese
1 small chopped onion
1 clove finely shopped garlic
Salt and pepper to taste
2 T olive oil

Mix all ingredients together to form patties.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with your favorite herbs, spices, and other secret ingredients.
Place in a preheated skillet with 2T of olive oil.
Cook each side for about 4 minutes to heat through, and brown the outside.
Don’t mess with the patties while cooking; let the first side brown nicely before flipping.
Makes four large patties

Actually I dont know the exact recipe but my mom uses 1 pound of crab and 1 pound of shrimp. It makes the crab go alot further and the shrimp a different flavor and texture. Me likeum that way.

Sorry the 15-25" accross was the spread of the legs, and yeah they were the common size that we caught. Some of the bigger crabs we caught measured atleast 8" accross the shell. I dont think we caught any bigger than 10" accross though.

dood do you work?

and if you do is it for 15 min at a time just enuff to buy some shells and a deer tag, or gas to the docks?????:D

Sure, I work a regular 40 hour a week job, that happens to pay very well. Which makes it so I can afford to take many days off during deer season. And, I live 4 blocks from the beach, and 20 minutes from the municipal pier in Pacifica. I had to go in to work tonight for four hours of doubletime, which gives me tomorrow off. Guess what I'll be doing.....CRAB FISHING!!:D

I am a jerk. As promised, I spent he day crabbing, and this was dinner:
