I'm trying to find out if the shift selector shaft itself is sealed. With the electric actuator removed permanently, would the selector shaft leak or be vulnerable to water / outside contaminants?

There is an o-ring between the actuator and t-case body. With the actuator removed you can see a spanner nut, diagrams show an o-ring with the nut and selector shaft so I'm curious if that o-ring pictured is inside or the one that touches the actuator.

My goal is a manual shift conversion - If the shaft is sealed, it should be easy. If not, then I'll need parts made.

That’s me! :rotfl:

If I had a dang Ford with a BW tcase the conversion would be easy but nothing on the 273.

Just asked are trans tech and he said it won’t leak with the actuator removed, his thoughts are that what ever you fan up for a shifter will have to have the detent built in cause there are no detentes internally on that case to hold it in position.

Well, doesn't that muddy up the water... I just assumed it would have detents built in.

Do you work at a dealership, by chance?

The 273 does in fact have detents just like a 241. The sector (shift) shaft does have an o ring behind the lock nut that keeps oil in the case.

Should be pretty straight forward to make a lever and turn it into a 271.

I may have been over thinking the lever part for a while. I was thinking I'd use the selector shaft gear from the actuator to weld a lever on and then make a bracket to hold it all together but it may be too much junk. Now I'm thinking there shouldn't be much torque applied to the mechanism when shifting so I'm wondering if one of these clamp on universal trans linkage brackets would work. (assuming it fits)

Unfortunately yes

I feel like I've asked you this before but I can't remember or find the post - Can the trucks computer be tricked in to thinking the tcase is manual shift via scan tool? The truck always complains at start up about the actuator being unplugged.
