I am contemplating this SYE from Tom Woods for my 208, it may be a bit cheaper than a 241 swap and definately ceaper than a doubler setup. Just curious if anyone has installed this and what their thoughts are as to the quality, durability, etc. :dunno:

I know Tom Woods has a great reputation for quality but they are the only outfit so far that makes a set up like this. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Yeah I don't have this one, and I will not buy it because I can do the same, I will be doing mine first and depending on how much it costs me, I might start making the same and sell them cheap.
If you are not in a hurry, I could even tell you what you need to do, you can do it.

In short, they are cutting down your tailhousing and shaft and refinishing it.

I kind of gathered that they were just whacking the end off the tail housing and machining it for a new seal. I wasn't sure if they were making a whole new output shaft or just cutting a stock one down. I was just about to buy a Dodge case and make my own SYE, until I found this. My rig is a DD and I like having a speedometer...so this unit looked like the way to go.

If you get one done by the time snow melts in the rockies then I may be interested in yours. Send pics if you come up with a final product.

I will be back in feb and will be working on this.
And I will start going again to CO in the spring.:waytogo:

Mine has a slip also. I looked briefly at their SYE. Not a priority right now but maybe in the future

I'm intrested!

He is a link showing how to use parts from a Dodge 208 to have a real SYE.

I was just about an hour away from buying a Dodge back half to do exactly what those guys did. The only problem is that you lose your speedometer, which isn't an issue for most trail rigs...but since mine is my daily driver I kind of like it. Plus, I am in a certain business where I regulate the driving behavior of motorists in my state . I need to be sure I am an example with my own ride.

My other options include, the Dodge/Chevy combo with a GPS as my speedometer. Or spend some bucks on a passenger drop 241 and do an SYE. Or spend some more bucks and just twin stick it (that would take a year or so for me to save up for).

Which ever I do, I may just go ahead and start a build thread and keep folks updated that way...if anyone cares. I'm trying to get time off for BB12' and want to have my axles and T-case done by then.

Care to share any details? Very interested!! :waytogo:

Sye

A couple of years ago i put together a K10 with a SYE from the driveshaft super store. It was just a flat flange on a slip yoke and it seemed to work OK. It was fairly cheap and still allowed me to have a CV joint at the transfer case, have a speedo and remove the driveshaft if i broke something. The only pain was disassembling the t-case and drilling and tapping the main shaft to retain the SYE.

I considered that option for a while, but I would like to get rid of that ginormous tail cone and help the driveshaft angle a bit. The Tom Woods set up is basically what you have except they cut and mill most of the tail cone and machine a new shorter shaft.

Also, I have heard mixed reviews on Driveshaft Superstore. Some folks have had very poor customer service...broken parts with no warranty honored...excuses for breakage implying it's not their workmnship...etc. Have you wheeled much with your setup? Any issues?

I didn't like the length of tail cone either but it was the cheapest set for me. The Tom Woods set up looks way better and will give you a little longer driveshaft if angle is a concern. Right after I ordered that piece I read some horrible reviews on driveshaft super store's business ethics but my stuff showed up OK. When I built that truck it was a fight every step of the way, so I sold it. The kid that i sold it to put it to the real test. He broke the ring and pinion in the 12 bolt 3 or 4 times. Turns out that it didn't like landing under power. He even stripped the 4 bolts that hold the transfer case adapter to the tranny by jumping it and the SYE or tail cone never gave trouble. We mostly wheel in the snow and mud because there are no other good places in our area. I will see if i can get a pic of that set up.

Okay so now you guys have renewed my thoughts for my own stuff. I don't have a 208 in use right now but with 3 of them sitting here...

I have 4 sitting here and in a day or 2 I will be working on the first one, if I can do what I want to do in a reasonable time I would consider doing this for money, but it has to be cheap or no one will want me to do it, so it has to be easy enough.
Will update soon.

If you sell these, will you be doing the whole T case or just the tailhousing and shortened shaft? Would you just machine one and then trade out parts from any buyers? I am interested and I would rather give my money to a fellow CK5'er :waytogo: than a company that is already making plenty of money. Looking foward to some pics.

Yeah second scenario, it's easier to ship parts than a whole tcase.
