Anyone rebuilt there own tranny?

I've got a tranny that needs rebuilt (E4OD) I know, I know. Has anyone rebuilt an electronic tranny before. How hard is it? I just ordered the Ford factory service manual for the van. I has the entire tear down and rebuild of the tranny in it. I am pretty mechanically inclined. I think it might have a "hard part" broken though. Feels like a broken tooth in the rear end but the it is coming from the tranny (sound is coming from tranny) It is slipping real bad and even locked up the other day like it was hung up on somthing. I gased it and it came loose. I test drove it the other day because a guy that works for me had to get it towed to the shop. It is going to be $1100 to get it rebuilt if I take it out and put it in myself (Yikes!). Any help would be great. Thanks!!!
 
It would be like rebuilding any other tranny , the right tools , cleanliness and attention to detail are the keys .

I still farm mine out though , I don't trust myself :thumb:
 
I'm gonna buy a used 700R4. You can get them for $100 sometimes. I'll learn to rebuild it and have it set aside for if/when mine needs to be swapped.

I want to be to the point of being able to literally fix, rebuild, or replace EVERYTHING on my truck.

that ford service manual is awesome, I have one for the e4od, and others, but they are complete step by step, bolt by bolt, you shouldn't have any problems with it.

p.s., get one of these
 
that is a universal clutch pack compressor for auto trans, it won't be the only thing you need, but it will probably be the most important.
 
I just finished rebuilding my th350. being in school made time scarce to i had it apart for about 2 months and finally got it back together about 2 weeks ago and installed in the same weekend. i got it in the truck and started it and i ran it through the gears and no movement. it scared the $hit out of me. turns out i didnt have enough fluid in it. i ran it down the road and it runs but i need to have my carb adjusted. im on vacation now so i didnt have time to adjust everything but im hoping all will turn out running ok with it. i did everything by the manual and tried to be as clean as i could. it might not have been so bad if i would have been able to work on it straight through but im not sure i want to rebuild another:doah:. my biggest problem was rounding up most of the tools and i learned that most tranny shops arent willing to help out the DIYers but if you might find one that will like i did. all in all it was a good experience and for now it works but i guess well see how long it lasts:haha:if you have any questions feel free to ask and good luck if you decide to do it.
 
You might want to contact a local Trade ( Vocational ) School. Many times the instructor would agree to rebuild the transmission as a class project. Depending on the school and space available the instructor would probably have you deliver the transmission. You would pay for the parts required to rebuild it, they would charge you 10% of the cost of the parts for their labor ( this covers rags and solvents used to clean the old tranny ). They may require two to three weeks to complete the rebuild. This may be the cheapest overall option.
 
If an E4OD goes out it is time to scrap the vehicle... They can be rebuilt for about $500 in parts if you do it yourself. I did it 3 times in 2 years on the same truck. Everytime something new would fail. The last time I got it running and sold it before something else went wrong.
 
Well I have found a master rebuild kit for like $250. I think I may have broke a "hard part" because it feels like the rear end is all effed up but what ever it is, is coming from the tranny. What are the chances it could be the torque converter? It didn't really start slipping over a short period of time. He just got in it after a job and it had a hard time going. He drove it like 20 miles (doh!) to the next job and then it wouldn't move when he came out to leave. I had it towed to my shop and it wouldn't move again. I tried a couple days later and somthing "popped" and it started moving but it was slipping and popping and surging. I drove it around the block a couple of times and it seemed like I had no power. I wonder if I should try "slapping" (HA!) a torque converter in it. Lucky it is in a van so I have a dog house I can pull out and get right to the tranny so I don't think it will be horrible to remove.
 
Even if it is a bad torque converter you will need a full rebuild. Rebuild kit, rebuilt torque converter, new solenoids, plus any hard parts as a minimum. It will not last very long if you skip any of those parts. Your going to spend a minimum of $500 plus hard parts or another core before you are done.
