Do they make such a thing? i figured since i want to spool my rear end i could get hubs that will unlock so i can keep one side un locked to keep it streetable. It would basically act like an open carrier since one wheel would free wheel.

Prob wouldn't work well even if they did make such a thing. When I broke a rear shaft in my 14ff and I drove out with only one tire power it sucked and was better driving out in front drive.

that would drive like crap, and would likely break alot of hubs.
my buddy has a d44 rear with warn premiums on it. he goes threw alot of hubs.
i swear, you wont even notice that spool.

drove mine everyday for more than 4 years. i let other people drive it, and they didnt notice either.
the only thing was with a/t's on it, you would hear the small pebbles of gravel in parking lots getting ground in.

I broke a 35 spline Dana 70 shaft and had the ARB engaged, it drove weird and had crap for traction in the dirt with one tire locked in. Locking hubs on a rear axle is weak. 35 spline Dana 60 hubs would not last. O.E.M. cromo selectable rockwell hubs would last but you would be looking at a $3,000 rear axle that wouldnt work very well. You would be better off with an ARB and stock shafts.

my inside tire howled through turns. I was forever trying to keep the axle flange bolts tight. and in the winter I ended up backwards more than 1 time. ass end allways trying to pass the front.

mine barked if you blipped the throttle under a turn. but not under smooth throttle or coast.
id take a spool over a detroit in the snow/ice. no lock/unlock. and yes any locker/spool/ or limited slip drives like poop in the snow/ice.
im checking my axle bolts for proper torque before driving it:D

mine howled pretty steady. a selectable or a truetrac would all be FAR wiser choices. I'm starting to really like the truetrac detroits.

looks like that grizzley is only availiable for 8.0" toy diffs?

probably wouldnt work well in my D80 or D110 though.

Have to agree with you here. My rear is welded and other than hearing the tires skid mildly in parking lots, I really don't notice it at all. I even drove the K5 quite a bit in the snow last winter. On my 35x12.50 MTRs, it truthfully handled better than my pickup does with no weight in the bed on 235/85s.

I'm not sure I would bother with anything but a spool in the back. It would be nice on snowy sidehills once in a blue moon to run full open, but there's no way I'd spend even half of what a new ARB costs for the couple times I've wished I had the ability.

Dammit. I wish there was an absolute answer on here. =/

But just so you guys know. I live in Texas. Dry all the time except for when i take my top off. =]
So tire wear might be an issue.

They make a grizzly locker for the 14ff and it is cheaper than a detroit and supposedly less prone to breaking when a axle shaft let's loose.
I drove my old fullsize for a few years with a welded rear, you just learn how to turn to minimize tire scruffing. Ice was the worse but just gotta learn to quirks and drive it.

thats grizzly is under $400. i have been looking at that for my street truck.
there is no right answer here. you have to make a descision based on your own needs and wants, as every option has its own good/bad.

What do you want out of your rig? What is your goal? Then we can help you.

go to the junkyard and get a spare set of spider gears. take your carrier out and weld it up. if you dont like it either pull your carrier out and replace with spiders, or replace it with a different locker.

Seems like a no brainer. Welding a diff is free. If you dont like it then spend the money on a detroit/grizzly/ etc

Well it's my daily driver/ weekend warrior.
And i'm at that point where i've done all I can with the equipment I have. So I'm upgrading the drivetrain. Just got the 14bff in and 4.10's so I find it a little redundant to keep an open carrier. And being the penny pincher I am I want the cheapest most effective way to lock up my rear end. And I'm not welding diffs. I'd rather spend the $130 for a mini-spool.

Well, I would go with a Detroit.....oh wait, I did:thumb:
