I wouldn't spend and $$$ on a mini-spool for a 14ff. Welding the gears is so easy and free and is still easily reversible if you don't like it. I have a detroit in mine now but it is a HO52/72 version so 17 spline. After breaking a shaft I want to get back to 30 spline for ease of finding spare shafts so I am gonna buy a grizzly locker next spring then sell this detroit.
if you keep your eyes open on craigslist and ebay you can always find someone selling their slightly used or brand new lockers. Be it an air, electric, spool, or auto.
Got my 14b detroit for 330 shipped. Came with Toyo (or Yukon can't remember) install kit and 1410 yoke. All brand new
As already mentioned running a spool or welded rear end and unlocking one hub is NOT just like an open diff. A guy in our club runs a spool in the D60 in the back of his Jeep. He tried this idea by removing the axleshaft on one side and making a bolt on cap....he drove to the trail a few times and gave up because it handled horribly.
I have personally ran a welded rear diff in my Blazer for probably around 10 years. It was never my daily driver during this time but I never hesitated to drive it to town or work occassionally and also regularly made 150-200+ mile round trips to the trail. This was with both 35" MT/R's and 38" bias TSL's. The only time I ever noticed it were tight turns in town because the tires chirping and slightly increased rear tire wear. Another good friend has run a welded rear diff in his truck for almost as long with both 38" and 42" TSL's including driving it on the freeway at 65 mph for hours on end with no issues.
I think im gonna go with the Grizzly Locker. It's a forged case vs. the detroit's cast case and they have a replace or refund warranty. And Just Jeeps can get me one for 330 so its a no brainer. Has anyone run a Grizzly?
