Just curious if anyone has taken the plunge and bought one.

I bought an older ZZ crate engine that we are rebuilding for my brothers '77 K10 but it sorta piqued my curiosity about GM's performance crate engines.

The ZZ short block for 2300 seems to be a pretty reasonable platform to build off of depending on what you were looking to do.

Yes, between the folks and I we have gotten ZZ3/4/5/6
Mine was technically the SP350/385, but I pulled the intake and added the Edelbrock Pro Flo 4 (GM sells it like this as a ZZ6 EFI)

They have been great engines. We ran the snot out of the 3 and 4, no issues

The thing that concerns me is, will this engine idle smoothly?

a) In general?

b) In gear? Or can it idle smoothly in gear with the right converter?

The cam is not too wild at 208 intake/221 exhaust @ .050

However, the SP383 is only a few hundred $$$ more also has the alum heads. The cam is wilder at 222 intake/230 exhaust @ .050 BUT with 33 more inches to "compensate" for the "wilder" cam. Roughly 30 more hp and torque for $600 more.

Yeah these things idle real smooth, zero issues
