Found a Fod 10.25 in pretty good shape at a buddy's salvage lot. Anyone ever used one? they seem to be comparible to a gm 14 full floater, but i havent done the research on the gears/locking or posi's they have. I can get it for about 100$....should i get it?

Good axle very comparable in strength to a 14 bolt.

Lockers are more expensive but gears are about the same.

No real disadvantage unless its a newer one with the metric lug pattern, then skip it

Thats some good info to know there about skipping out on the metric deal. just curious, but what makes the newer, metric ones crappy or have more disadvantage? (sorry i dont know too much about the ford stuff)

the lug pattern is 8 x 170mm, the older 8 lug is 8 x 6.5", its not crappy per se, but it just wont match your chevy front axle, so rims are different and you cant rotate your tires with out debeading them and swapping rims (pita).

that does sound like a pain in the a**. I think the axle i saw today is an older one, but it looks like it may have come from a dual wheel the more and more i look at it. I dont think that would work

the metric Ford/sterling axles are actually 10.5 as opposed to the 10.25 sterling used in the 87-97 F250/F350.

The sterling 10.25 can be had in a semifloat 8 lug also. Many of the full float trucks had a limited slip carrier in them. Can be built tighter for not alot of money. Strong axle.

I've got about 300K on mine, most of it pretty deep mud. Put a new set of wheel bearings in at about 200K, change the fluid out after every hunting season if I went through deep water, or when it starts popping after a long straight run otherwise.

The friction modifiers in the oil wear out and the clutches start sticking.

Mine is the semifloater single wheel.

And it was a direct bolt in under my truck.....................................

At least, I guess it was, since it came on it from the factory..........:D

My buddy has 10.5 we put under sas 01 1500 when we did his sas. We used it cause it matched the front super 60 we put under his truck like said above it did come with a limited slip and 4.10s, gear prices are about the same as other axles. Now it has 5.13 He beats on it, the truck is on 49s iroks right now he did run 52 michelin xzl.

Thanx everyone for the replies. Maybe i found a score. Im pulling the diff cover tomorrow to make sure its all ok. I had planned on putting in a 14sf that i have laying on my garage floor, but after having this fall in my lap, i may use it instead
