anyone wheel' a 292 6cyl?

Don't just turn your machine shop loose on your motor build as far as performance - the person in charge might be a fantastic machinest but not much on parts selection.

Stick to the basic's of a solid motor build :
* Long stroke - the 292 already has a 4.120" stroke ( and there is no room for any increase in length - that is the reason for the offset motor mount/fuel pump cam lobe locations ).

* proper intake/exhaust for your RPM range

* Cam grind with as much lift as offered with mild duration

* build as much cylinder/cranking pressure as possible . Custom pistons are real high dollar ( I went with a LPG piston for higher comp rating ) , or you could use a cylinder head off of a early 194 motor that has much smaller chambers ( U2slow- suggested this earlier in the thread ) .

Let the machine shop inspect everything and make sure that you are building a good core to begin with. Do not worry about larger valves and head work at this point . The O.E.M. head has great velocity at extreme low end but is just not a huge air mover for anything much over a truck motor.

I could bore you to death on what all I did on my 292 build so if more info is wanted just let me know .....

I, for one, would love to be bored to death by your post Tom.:p:

I always enjoy the tech you add to this forum.

I had no idea there were other in-line six cylinder closet freaks out there ! I could take some pic's and post up but it might take me a little while to do so - work is demanding at this time.......

Thanks for the kind words fella's !

You should look for a diesel. My buddy built a diesel IH scout 192 (I think) and it got 25 mpg before it was broke in hauling a heavy scout around.:eek1:

You can play with your 6s all you want. I have been ther, and done that, Even got the tee shirt.............6=8
All is i can say is I went from inline 6s back to to a V8s for three reasons:
More power
Cheaper to Build
Better MPG
V8s are fule injected ofcourse,
If I ever build another inline it will be another FId engne. IMHO that is the only way to go with an inline. other wise you are better off with a V8. Just my informed and tested opinion.
