Anyone with an Avalanche?

Sorry if I came off offensive, I do that quite often and did not intend on it. The back glass is a seperate piece, if you leave it in then the mid gate comes down without the lower frame of the window, if you take the glass out it fits in a place on the back side of the mid gate and then the whole gate fold down to make the floor of the bed. Yeah it would be nice to have an 8 foot bed, but it sure is nice to have the comfort of a crew cab 4x4 that isn't a mile long. My biggest concern is what to put on the seals to ensure they stay soft and work for years to come. I have heard of silicon grease is the best thing, any ideas on that one? There are all kinds of nifty things on this truck, like all the new Chevy trucks over the past 20 plus years, I think they have to grow on you for awhile. I think I have hated every change Chevy has ever made until they grew on me.

I got a USED loaded(I think every option except a sun roof) 2002 Avalanche 4x4 Z71 and paid 28K for it. 7 months prior to my purchase it stickered for 37K. I'm not sure what the 3/4 ton models are running with the 8100 in it. I saw the Caddilac version and it runs 53K, OUCH !!!

Use silicon lubricant on the seals. Spray it on a rag and wipe down the seals.

Silocon spray will stick to every-thing and will float for hours, it is also hard to remove, and will make any-other "top-coat" not adhere correctly to other surfaces. (thus- the clean cloth-wipe thing)

WOW, $53 K for the caddy - yikes!

I have used the silicon lube before, but I will take your advice on the "rag-thing" seriously. Don't need a big mess !! ANother point about the caddy version is the front fenders are all metal and the rear quarters are too, so the only plastic cladding is on the doors, bumpers, and the razor back looking thing. It is a completely different truck as far as body parts, I was thinking damn I could take the smooth and painted cladding from one of them and get a nicer look. Too much of a hassle and then I won't want to get the thing dirty or use it as a truck. That isn't me at all, I will take it through the creeks, in the mud, over the rocks, wherever my adventures take us.

Hey BigBurb, grats on the Avalanche purchase!! I got a question for ya and the others on the board. I really think the Avalanche is a pretty good idea, but was wondering if it could be tweaked and be a GREAT idea?

What I am wondering/thinking is this, I really want the 3rd row option which is why I am looking at Suburbans. However, I keep expecting to hear of someone building an aftermarket top for the rear of the Avalanche and adding brackets so a 3rd row seat could be put in.

Surely someone out there is working on this? I checked out Leer and havent seen anything on there yet. Someone else who could do it would be the CAN-BACK guys!!!

What do you guys think? If you had a soft or hard top to add on the back of the Avalanche, an optional 3rd row, you really would have the best of all the worlds!!!!

Sam

Thanks, I am enjoying the Avalanche very much. I am happier with it than any new vehicle I have ever owned. As far as tweaking it, hell you can tweak anything. I know that the plans for 2003 are to change the plastic cladding and have it painted instead of gray. You can get a soft or hard toneau cover as an option now even though I have never seen one with a soft one. A 3rd would be do-able I would think with a little thought process. It would definately be for small kids with short legs due to no drop down in the floor boards. There is an aftermarket top I believe it is made by Snugtop and endorsed by GM http://www.snugtop.com/images/xuv_web.jpg The only thing is the mid gate would still be up to do this, but the back glass could be out. A Can-Back would be cool though. I don't need a 3rd seat, but I don't think Chevy would do it cuz it would clash with the mid gate design. Unless they made the mid-gate 60-40 split so you could enter through the passenger compartment to the 3rd seat. Hmmmmmm

I wish I could find the copy I made of the specs on the current engines. In a nut shell,
In typical G.M. fashion.
The 4.8 and 5.3 share the same bore, but different strokes.
The 5.3 and 6.0 share the same stroke, but different bores.

Guess what I found (kinda).

327- 4.000 bore/3.250 stroke w/5.70 rods. 1.75 R/S Ratio.

5.3L/325- 3.780 bore/3.622 stroke w/6.098 rods. 1.68 R/S Ratio. 9.45 compresion ratio.

Now if I could only find the cam specs, I know I got'em around here some-where!

Interesting specs. Great running engine with lots of pep. I want the BIGBLOCK next !!!

Those 5.3s rock, the cam-in-block low-end really comes alive with a good head on them (stock 5.3 head - pretty cool looking unit).

Those other guys can have their "cutting-edge" OHC and high-end passing power. I'll stick with geting it off the line first, /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

I'm starting to get used to them, I kinda like the front of them. I have also hated every change GM makes for a while. I remember I hated the 88-98's when they first came out, even though I was 6 years old...now I really like that style, definately more than the 99-ups...not sure where my K5 fits in...probably like it mor ethan anything.

I am happy with the Avalanche so far so good. The new SIlverado's for 2003 will have the front end like the Avalanche, so we'll get to see more of it. It is like anything, I think it has to grow on you. I can rememeber in 79 when Chevy made the drastic front end change....Oh My God ..life was over as we knew it. Chevy had went to hell was the word on the streets !! now we can all look back and laugh at it all. I am a true Chevy fan, there has never been a Chevy truck that I haven't like the looks of yet. Still want to sell my Burb and get a K5 though.

Yea, aren't those dealer installed Fabtech 6'' lifts, that is what the cradle looks like and it is fabtech blue. Pretty good idea, you can finance your lift through the dealer that way.

I have only seen the lifted ones in the mags so far, but they do look tough. I'd love to do a 1 ton straight axle conversion and throw on some 38's or 44's !!! I have only added the normal goodies to mine like the dark tinted windows, vent visors, bug shield, Wrangler NW dual batteries, and double step nerf bars. I want to fab a custom pre-runner type bumper for the front with a winch mount next.

I definatly think they look really nice with a lift. I didnt stop to ask any questions about it or I would have wanted to leave with it lol. I cant go into a chevy dealership, its too dangerous to my wallet.

I hear you there !! I was getting the oil changed and a lube job on my 2000 Z71 the day I bought my Avalanche !! I was just looking, I swear !!

Seee Dangerous! What color did ya get? How are they offroad? What does the interior look like? Sorry but I have to ask, they look like a fun truck to own. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I have a black 2002 1/2 ton 4x4 Z71 with the Graphite heated leather seats, luggage rack, On Star, and everything else imaginable. It drives better than my 00 Silverado ext cab Z71 and turns much sharper with less body roll. The get up and go is a little less because of the 700 lbs. in weight difference. As far as off-road, hmmmmmm I can't afford a divorce so I'll keep it on the road for now. I've had it down in a creek bed and other than being too low it would grab and go pretty good. It has a LSD in the rear. The interior reminds me of the new Silverado trucks for the most part, but very spacious and comfortable and quick to convert. I am enjoying the truck 100% so far.
