Are np203s now desirable? - full time 4x4

No.

After some consideration still no but there are people out there who just want to drive their old truck and don’t care what tcase goes in it. Those people can tolerate them.

Only if you're doing a 203/208 doubler I guess...?

Not desirable but neither are the $500 half tops people are always trying to sell. If you're seeing one priced high it's because nowadays people think anything square body is worth $15k.

If I was making a living with mine I'd go 203/205. Heavy duty and bulletproof.
For my personal use a 208 is fine.

In a daily driver I’d take an unconverted one, before I made my truck my wheeling unit I loved my 203 on the snowy roads. The low range sucks and it’s a heavy SOB, but they were good cases if people didn’t convert them.

I'm actually putting an original 78 K10 & K20 at the top of my list that have the 203 in them. I'm wanting a beater for the snow where I moved. It's to save my good trucks from the salt for a few months. There's no way I'm running my 77 as a daily driver in this shit.

I've seen that. But everybody still disagrees with the weights posted. I've seen all kinds of weights online. I will say my 203 was amazingly heavy but I don't have the actual weight.

My nutsack tells me that the 205 is decently lighter, I didn’t feel as much drop as when I tried to lift the 203
That additional 40 or 50lbs. is rough on the ole N/S scale-o-meter !
And the physical size of the 203 is a down fall when handling one - all that leverage work’n against ya’ was not fun as a young man and just plain not acceptable as an old man….

Agreed about a dedicated ice and snow road application being a good idea but other than that my thought is only need one for a Doubler or ( as stated earlier ) even better skip it all together and go for the MAGNUM set up - gives so much more gearing options.

Way back before the Doubler was a thing damn near every 203 was canned in favor of 205’s and even 208’s for that matter.
We would take the front and rear yokes , Speedo housing and rear passenger round bearing retainer plate off because they would fit some 205’s ( depending on year and application ) and sh%t can the remaining 203 parts or put ‘em in the scrap pile and wait for recycling prices were good again.
When ORD came out with the Doubler we all wished we had saved all those 32 spline 203’s….

I think, at least for me when I swapped a 203 for another slightly less beat up one, was the weight distribution on the 203 coupled with no solid bottom.

It was wonky as hell even with the transmission jack. It did fall off once while doing the swap, even with tie-downs all around it.

When I do the 205 swap I think Ill use my engine hoist through the tranny tunnel.

But damn, when that 203 hit the garage floor I felt a seismic shift.

You will be amazed at how much easier it is to stab a 205 over the awkwardness of a 203 - no comparison in the PITA department.

I'm looking forward to the swap, maybe not so much the $ to do it though. But I think for the long run it will be best to snag a 205 while I can and install it when I can afford it. I'll keep most of the questions for the thread I make when that happens. Hahahah

Hopefully picking it up tomorrow morning at dinosgitdown. 205 flange front fixed yoke rear with a the 10 spline input but I'm getting the 10-27 couple sleeve from ORD or the guy has a 27 spline and necessary 27spline coupler for it. Which I can swap in to replace the 10 or just use the 10-27 ORD sleeve.
