Are np203s now desirable? - full time 4x4

I'm going to buy the 27 spline and 27 coupler just so I have it. I may or may not swap out the 10 spline, haven't decided yet, depends on ease of swap and the necessity. But probably more likely what you guys tell me to do will be the course I take

Another benefit with going with the 27/27 spline shafts/couplers is a little less driveline slop - not a huge issue with an auto trans but it does help make for a better drive experience when going slow off-road.

I'm looking forward to the swap, maybe not so much the $ to do it though. But I think for the long run it will be best to snag a 205 while I can and install it when I can afford it. I'll keep most of the questions for the thread I make when that happens. Hahahah

Hopefully picking it up tomorrow morning at dinosgitdown. 205 flange front fixed yoke rear with a the 10 spline input but I'm getting the 10-27 couple sleeve from ORD or the guy has a 27 spline and necessary 27spline coupler for it. Which I can swap in to replace the 10 or just use the 10-27 ORD sleeve.
I did the np203 to np205 swap in a 78 k5. I took the np205 from a 72 k5 th350-np205. I got the adapter and linkage also. It was a direct bolt in. I bought new drive shafts which I measured.

On my '78 I have the torque bar from 203 to the bell housing. Does the 205 have such a thing? Or does it just mount tot the cross member?

You will be amazed at how much easier it is to stab a 205 over the awkwardness of a 203 - no comparison in the PITA department.
I agree, even tho a 205 is heavy is nowhere near as awkward as a 203. I kept my 32 spline 203 just in case I ever decide to do a doubler.

A lot of 205s don’t have the holes drilled or tapped to mount the torque rod, the older 205s had a brace that bolted to the frame but then they found out that cracked tailhousings because of flex.

After running the $ and real use i can say ORD Magnum box/205 for the win . True 3 speed box over 2 speed box .
Are you saying that you can't really use all 4 available ratios?

The Magnum Box retains the 1:1 and 1.96:1 ratio that an NP205 has stock and adds an additional 2.72: and 5.33:1, all available depending on how you shift it!

@tarussell
I'll get the 27 spline input and 27 spline sleeve to mate it to my th350 with this 205. then I'll source the figure 8 adapter which hopefully @Desert_K5 can locate.. hahahah

I just found @beags86 seat belts today (I'm late af on these too) I have close to 350 containers to look thru. I'll find it sometime this century. Sorry bro. :doah:

My 78 has the torque bar from the 203 to the th350 also. If you are going to a np205-th350 on the 78 k5 you will need a different torque bar. I don't know what year I used but I found one from another year that works.

The 72 K5 np205-th350 is bolted to the frame for bracing. The holes for the torque brace on a 78 k5 fit but the length of the torque brace to belhousing on the th350 is incorrect. I tried torque braces from other years and applications and was able to find one that works. Perhaps it was a np205-th400 torque brace.

If you are going through the work of swapping transfer cases, why not swap to an NP208. Much better than an NP205.

Fair question but honestly, it didn't cross my mind and nobody mentioned that option in another thread about me swapping my 203 out so I didn't think about it. Not that anyone owes me that, I didn't know it was an option and it wasn't brought up as being one. So I proceded in the purchase of the 205.

I'm in too deep on the purchase to back out. I wouldn't feel right about it so, 205 it is.

I've read about this on other forums, some guys assuming they had the bolt holes on the 205 would shorten that brace from the Tcase to bellhousing.
