Are there advantages of auto or manual tranny for rocks

When the TC is stalling with the stator held, think of it as a liquid planetary. The higher the stall the more multiplication but more heat.

A simple shift kit corrects this. The converter does not have to be locked for compression braking. In the 700r4, GM's stratagy for lock up is the TCC is feed by 2nd gear oil. No way to lock the TCC in first. 2,3,4 all lock. However Art Carr is the only producer of a VB that allows TCC lock in 1st that I am aware of. 4L60E's don't share the same stratagy.

Aren't later 700s electric lockup? Pretty sure the one out of my '89 burb is electric. If I want it locked up I could flip a switch... should stall the motor if you come to a stop with it engaged, but i hear it's not good for T.C. to use it that way.

I think you would need to make the converter lock up at the same time. But the problem with most of the 700r4s and 4l60s I have driven, is that, even when you drop the lever down into 1st, the trans will shift into 2nd when it gets to a certain rpm anyway.

You don't need the converter locked to get compression braking. Newer electronic trans usually are programmed as you mentioned (will upshift into 2nd as a certain rpm), but I know the stock 700r4/4L60 in my Blazer has never done that and it's spent numerous times locked in "1" in low range with the foot to the floor and never upshifts.
