Are there advantages of auto or manual tranny for rocks

Theres definetly ways around the downfalls of each. I do like being able to hit the next gear instantly if I need it though.

Manuals are much more durable and more fun to drive IMO... I just like being able to hit brake and gas at the same time and if your axles aren't locked it can act as a posi too... Good way to heat up a tranny though. I know it's gotten me up a few hills and through some sketchy spots though.

Basically like others have said, it's preference.

very true... it all comes down to where you wheel. Where I wheel, everyone with a stick makes it further than the auto trans guys.

take this video for example:

See the blue k20? It has more power than I do but has an auto. keep in mind we hit the hill at the same speed.

From what I've seen autos don't allow the engine to get into the higher rpm range which is needed to keep the wheels turning at a good speed. Autos keep shifting up and blog down the engine till you lose all momentum then it shifts down and all you do is spin. With a stick you select a good gear and you have constant power and speed to the wheels.

I know I've hit redline more then once on hills with my 700r4 and np208 though.

You may have a point but it looks like the k20 took a different line. You overshot him by a good 150 feet.... hard to believe that's the auto tranny's fault.

Really it comes down to durability, gearing and less power loss vz instant shifts. Take your pick.

I started off pro-auto but now manuals are looking alot better.

imo, with an auto, any "performance" use, you should be shifting manually anyway...

Really it comes down to durability, and instant shifts. Take your pick.

Unless you have three feet you just don't get the same control out of a manual as you do with an auto.... one foot on the brake and one on the gas. You can literally inch your way over obstacles where it's critical to not be going back and forth while your letting the clutch out.

Thanks for the input. I've always owned manual trannies in the past in my other vehicles. I'm new to chevys and 4 wheeling. I acquired my K5 with an auto tranny. Would going to a manual be difficult? I think it would be easier to start with a new vehicle.

I'm going to be changing my truck over, but I'm doing something a little different, so it may be a while before I actually get it done.

Yep, there it goes right down the middle of the shop and with all that gear, it aint stopping for anything!

if your deciding factor is how easy it can be to drink and drive... you're a complete douche and should never be allowed into a vehicle again.
