I want to take out the 454 Darby rates and put in a straight 6 for fuel mileage and torque.

Don't care much for speed

Also how can I make a 6 sound like a V8 with the right exhaust and muffler?

Cummins 12 valve is the only (cost effective) swap that is capable of a significant MPG increase and good torque and sounds good. Keep the big block, put turboz, and have so much fun that MPG won't matter

I doubt you'll see much better fuel mileage with that swap and you'll lose even more through a th400. Might want to consider a 350/th350 swap or a 350/700R.

and no, it won't sound like a V8.
Maybe a 305 with 700r4? Also vehicle is carburated. Wonder how I can change it to fuel injection with a 350/305

I might do a cummins. However how and where I can find a a 12v cummins with a good deal? Plus which will be the best auto transmission for that beast ?And how much to do to put that motor in depending on challange?

If you don't care about speed, why not consider the 6.2L? I don't know about the cummins, but the 6.2L will pull down 25MPG. And a direct bolt in.

I might also want to put in a 700r4 to further increase mileage. Do it need a tv cable since the vehicle is carburated?

My 292 got exceptional mileage with a well tuned 4 barrel and intake and headers.

Look at Clifford performance and skip the rest. 292 is the shit. And it can be a 10 second truck if you want.

In a burb? Through a th400?

I'd believe that if we were talking about a rear wheel drive step side.

Original poster, I am assuming you are just trolling with ridiculous scenarios that won't actually take place. I can barely understand what you have written in the first post.

700 uses a TV cable.

Not sure there is a lot of challenge in it, but there is challenge, and there is common sense. If you want mileage, you put a motor in that will get you mileage. I doubt there is anything out there that will net you the mileage a 6.2L will. Mileage or power, you get one or the other, if you are serious about one or the other. Everything is a compromise.

Now if you want to get crazy, figure out how to put one of the new small Dodge diesels in there.

Believe it's been done in a K5. Burb probably less, but no other engine is going to get close to 25 in a K5, so it's pretty certain it would equal "best mileage" in a burb too. Might be less, but still better than the alternatives. I've heard of 19MPG with some pretty serious tweaking of fuel injection tune in a burb.

What makes a 12 valve swap the only one that is cost effective? If a dream diesel swap was a consideration you could certainly also consider a 4bt.

Either swap requires significant modifications under the hood for engine mounting, redoing the fuel system, chasing very expensive transmission parts, and a ton of labor.

So, am I to understand that your comment about 25 mpg is based on something you read online and not personal experience? With 3.08s and 31s the best economy my blazer has seen is 22mpg. I check regularly. I have seen around 20mpg even with 35s and 4.88s. These figures are base on extended highway driving at 55mph. 25mpg from a Suburban at modern highway speed sounds highly unlikely.

I wouldn't put all the time in for a diesel swap to end up with a 6.2. I love the engine, but if I wanted a gas suburban from the 80s to run better I'd be going LS.

No troll here. I got a 454 carb that I may keep a little while but not long especially with the fuel mileage. Its got power but don't have mpg

Plus I was wondering about experimenting with a straight 6 since I've been a v8 person. Ive heard that 6 straights are somewhat strong as a 6 straight cummins.

So I'm thing of giving the 6 straight a shot
