Are There Any Soft Top Makers Left ???

Email from STS:

"We are in the process of selling the business. The person whom I
believe will buy the company is in the 4WD business now and is a good
customer of ours. I am sure he will continue to build the line."

Dunno what it means, but I got this yesterday after asking them about the future.

A weird part of me likes the fact that my choices are narrower. Strangely rationalizes the crazy expense of the Can-Back (which is really choice). In a perfect world we could all find Can-backs on e-bay for 75 bucks.:wink1:

I'd love a can-back, but I don't think they ever made one for the '73-75's.
Bestop does, but I've heard not so good things on their quality, and I didn't like their windshield frame mounting (screw in studs to sheet metal), the STC method was much better (piece of alum. with the snaps on it), much easier to remove when you want to put the hardtop back on for the winter.

I called them today as well. Was going to order another top so I could throw it in the attic.Sure didn't want to spend the bucks but was going too anyway. So when I talked to the guy he told me about being sold but,of course, wouldn't tell me who the buyer was.Maybe it's not a done deal yet.He did tell me that it's a company that makes tops now.Hmmm... Anyway,he told me that I pretty much wouldn't have any problems getting one in the future. He did ask me what vehicle I have first, and then told me the aforementioned.Couldn't order one though as he said they are only finishing up the orders they have taken up to this date.Of course, the guy might just be talking out his XXX but he sounded on the level. We'll see.I still have my old Kayline(hated it) and I suppose I could pay out the XXX and have a local marine top guy reproduce the Fastrac that I have now.Only time will tell.

That guy's probably never recieved so many phone calls in his life, mabey if we keep calling him, he'll stay in business.
It does suck though, I was counting on an STC fastrac.

probably wishes they weren't going out of business now... :) never know the demand till the supply is gone, i suppose.

when i talked to him he said that the rent was killing them and was going up again. so they were selling plenty of tops, but the overhead was just way too much.

Anybody talk to him this week? It's been a couple of weeks. I was thinking of calling again. I'd really like one of their fastracs. Really...really....

Bump, What the latest word. . . . I am looking at getting a '75 Blazer with out a top thinking, I could get a new soft top for it. I hope they stick around.

Ok that does it! I'm going to go to a couple of marine shops tomorrow with my top and get some prices. As I've posted a couple of times as of late, I'm certain by using a pattern off of mine, that the STC could be reproduced easily and inexpensively. I'm going to try and get the straight dope on this.

Can anyone send me a good picture of the fast track version? I'd like to see exactly what the channel and lip look like. I'm sure the fast track version would be pricey but the snap version is very simple.
