Are you happy with your modified 350 TBI motor, or would you have done it differently?

Right now I would be satisfied with just enough power so the truck dowsnt downshift to third on the highway at the hint of the slightest grade.

Will a cam and headers (easy enough) wake up the motor that much? Or should one start to think about vortech heads, or a 383 stroker kit, or just start with a big block?

Where will you draw the line between power and money?

you can always change the shift points on a new chip as was stated.and probably get more power that way also.:wink1:that way you are not searching for gears on upgrade.may need a regear if it is high with big tires also to get back into the sweet spot in rpm.

up to 92 its 700r4 its cable kick down.

93- up its 4l60-e its all electric.

he will have non computer controled in the blazer. would need shift kit in tranny.

It's not shifting down to 3rd, it's just the TC unlocking under light throttle/mild load. That's pretty normal...

Lol I wish it was just the TC unlocking. Granted the truck will hold 65 mph fine, if I try and get it to hold higher than that on slight inclines it jumps dwn to third.

The tranny definately needs a shift kit. (Can these be installed with the tranny in the truck? READ: installed.)

I just wanted to know If its worth the investment to go through a cam and headers in the truck, or would it be wise to start from a more potent platform.

Ive read TBICHIPS articles, but how well does 250-300hp do In a truck this big?
The only thing I can relate to in my GTO, and thats probably 350 to the wheels and 3800lbs. If the Blazer drove like that I would happier than a senior on prom night with a date not wearing panties.

Gearing is something that needs to be considered in this equation also. My '90 with a stock 6.2 (less power than a stock TBI 350) and 700r4 could maintain 70 mph in OD on most normal highway grades, but it also had 4.10's and 33's at the time.

I got sick of the stock TBI so I modified it. Then I went crazy trying to tune the bugs out of it. I finally simplified it and transplanted a Cummins 6BT with a NV4500. I'd challenge any TBI to a race or tug of war. If nothing else they'll stop at the fueling station far before I do.

I am kind of satisfied. I have to much cam, poor heads, and I need some tuning.

Martin

The truck has 3.73s currently on 31s. soon to be 35s.

I want to draw the line between enough to have power when needed, but not enough to snap the 10 bolts anytime a feather hits the pedal.

Im thinking about a caddy 500, but Engine swaps can have potential tremendous amounts of downtime, and take a ton of dedication.

Maybe start with an RV cam of brians (tbichips) reccomendations, and headers. If that isnt enough, then heads. If that isnt enough, a stroker kit.

This seems like the best way to not have to spend money on parts twice (with the exception of maybe the camshaft).

Can anyone think of any other reasons to start with a different platform?

I would love to do a cummins, But I have heard motors like the 12valve are highly sought after (expensive) because they dont use EFI.

What was the price for your 6bt swap an what wold be some other good cummins to look for?

Gears are your friend. You stated here in a later post that you currently have 3.73's and 31" tires but are moving up to 35's. This will make matters alot worse for you, gearing is key long before an engine build.

X2...when I had 3.73s and 35s the only time od would lock up was going downhill.

for sale: 10b axles, 700r4

from what i have read here time and time again.

od trannys auto need deep deep gears with big tires.

if you will be 35" and 700r4 and light mods on tbi i would say min swap to 4.56 or 4.88 gears.

IMHO.. I drove my Suburban the first 25k on 31's and 3.73's... and with OD that's not enough gear to keep the truck in it's sweet spot. I think 4.10's and 31's would've been a better. When I ran around in 3rd it did very well but in OD it would unlock on a hill.

I've got 35's now and will be regearing to 4.88's, or maybe 5.13's if I end up going bigger in tire size(37's).
