Atl-atl's K5 Blazer Four Wheel Camper "The Crawlin Cabin" documentation thread!

Well, I picked up an all metal Luk slave from Napa and that fixed it. I let the remaining old brake fluid sit in a bottle over the weekend and it had lots of that white paste in it as well as lots of black sediment. I think the plastic slave just disintegrated from within. It never leaked but it stopped holding pressure. It had maybe 300 miles on it. The old master seems 100% fine but I havent pulled it apart yet, might not at this point since its probably good.

This was brand new fluid 300 miles ago.

The luk slave on the right is what I’m running.
I didn’t even know they made that black plastic one. What brand is that?

Thanks! Ive already got plans for a table. I might steal the one off my Tacoma for now. Its a huge cutting board I put a piano hinge on.

Totally using this idea. I had stupid complex setups in my head or repurposing Jeep tailgate tables. This is much more simple. Nice work.

My memory initially failed me and I thought it was a GM part. It is actually from LMC. Its a piece of crap and Im not happy with myself over buying crap like that. Its a real love hate relationship with LMC.

Yes LMC is very hit or miss. Mostly I find it's crap. No longer in my top 5 goto when searching for parts

Clutch parts I tend to stuck with Luk when I can. When the input bearing on my first 4500 failed on a trip to AZ I thought for sure the release bearing was going to be beat up since the entire input shaft was moving enough to bind up the 4th gear synchro. Once the trans was out the release bearing looked fine. No issue. I still replaced it with another Luk part because I didn’t want to risk it and have a problem later.

Good to know. This one seems much nicer. It releases WAY higher in the throw, to the point where Im relearning how to drive the truck haha. When I removed the old one, one of the two little screws that holds it in place came out with aluminum in the threads which is not great. I know for a fact I did NOT over tighten them. I think the hole was probably already stripped and not caught when it got rebuilt. I know those screws dont do much other than hold it in place but thats pretty crappy. I stuck a piece of .035 wire in there and jammed the screw home. I dont have a choice, the truck has to drive itself to Flagstaff today. Wish me luck!!

Well I made it to flagstaff. Truck had no trouble cruising at 65-70 even up the steep grades in between Sedona and Flagstaff going up to 7000 feet. Only had to drop it to 3rd gear twice. This trans is funny. The rpm drop from 3 to 4 is about 1250rpms but the drop from 4 to 5 is only about 250. Motor definitely likes to cruise at a slightly higher rpm. Its really happy in the 2-2500 range. I need much taller gears, especially if I go up to 37s. Time to start building some tons :D

The gear split isn't ideal with smaller engines. But being able to hold the gear you want is way more helpful than letting an auto do it for you. Glad it made it without a problem.

.67 from 3rd to 4th.
.25 from 4th to 5th
I know this, the 8.1 doesn't care about the split. It's pretty normal to skip fourth completely if I'm not trying to haul ass and feeling lazy about shifting. The drive bringing the Blazer home had me stuck behind a tool going 55mph leading into a climb up Monument Hill. I changed lanes and leaned into the throttle in 5th, not downshifting. The top of the hill is 7300 feet and the truck was going 75 when I got to it. No replacement for displacement for sure.

Apologies for the super late update on this. Overland Expo was an absolute blast. I had a nightmare scenario where the clutch slave cylinder ******** the bed a week before expo and I had to pull the trans three times before I got it diagnosed and fixed. The truck got an unbelievable amount of attention. I lost count of how many times people said "best in show" and it really made me wish there was a fan favorite category because I would have won! :D It was super fun to be posted up right in the front of the Four Wheel Campers booth which is right in between the camping area and the vendor booths so there was tons of foot traffic. I nearly lost my voice from talking to people nonstop for 4 days.

Here is a quick walkaround video. No commentary, just wind noise ha.

Not only were attendees infatuated with the truck, journalists were as well. Here are a few of the stories that were published about it.

That’s awesome! Truck looks great. Awesome setting.

Well its been a minute. Ive been busy with a thousand projects this summer. Thankfully a lot of them involve the Blazer. We've taken it camping a couple times since Expo and Ive been able to slowly chip away at the endless to-do list even though Im in Flagstaff and all my tools are in Phoenix now.

Testing out the new bumpers bike rack holding ability when offroad. Passed with flying colors.

Tomorrow Im planning to drive to Ridgway Colorado for a huge party that my buddy throws every year and Im hoping to take the Blazer instead of the RV. Should be a trip. Nothing spikes my anxiety like the thought of driving 5 hours across an Indian Reservation with no cell service in a 45 year old truck with completely donated organs(drivetrain) that I installed myself.

Ive done a ton of maintenance and mods to the Blazer to get it ready for longer trips like this. I installed a 250 watt solar panel, basic MPPT controller and inverter. This allows me to run the fridge for a couple days without worrying about anything and also use the Starlink when Im remote. I also installed powered fans in the holes where there used to be two basic vents. We've been getting a ton of rain in Flagstaff this summer, thankfully. But This resulted in the bed being wet one morning when the truck had just been sitting parked in front of the house. I took this as a sign that it was time to reseal the roof and I wasnt going to spend the time to reseal crappy passive vents so I installed fans. Running the wiring through the ceiling was a slight pain but nothing too bad.

Also mounted a jerry can onto the back bumper, you know, for the overlander cred. It was actually supposed to be two cans but the mounts I bought were some Amazon crap and theres no easy way to link them together and mount them on the bumper the way I built it. This fall Ill probably build a new mount for two cans. One is good enough to get me an extra ~50 miles of range so thats fine.

Since Im running a cat things get pretty hot under the driver side of the truck which is where the wiring harness runs for everything in the rear of the truck. This resulted in my wire loom starting to melt. Initially I just wrapped it in heat shield and called it good but I recently I started to smell melting plastic again so I relocated the wire harness to the outside of the frame rail. Its tucked up underneath so you cant see it unless you lay on the ground and look up at it.

When I was under there I noticed I had a busted exhaust isolator and this turned into a whole day project. My exhaust install was sub-par from the beginning so this was long overdue. I noticed some cracked welds at a few joints in the pipes which I think was a result of too much movement in the exhaust. Thankfully I had brought the good welder up from Phoenix for another project Im starting so I was able to get this taken care of quickly. Its now solid, my muffler is like an extra skid plate at this point!

Speaking of other projects, in case you didnt catch it in my other thread. I managed to score another "Blazer" Four Wheel Camper!! I now own 2 of the ~1000 of these that were ever made. This one is going to be for sale after I restore it. In fact, it already has a lot of interest. Ive already gotten it stripped down to the aluminum frame and skin. We were able to park in the garage for all of about 6 days hahaha. If you want to follow along Im documenting it here. I will also be documenting it on the new Darlington Adventures Youtube channel. Ive never done anything like this before so it should be interesting. Darlington Adventures on Youtube

Not a happy camper today. Accidentally backed the RV into the Blazer. Its very rare for me to be this absent minded. I had literally just parked the Blazer behind the RV so I could pull the RV into the driveway to get it ready for a trip. Like, park the blazer, get out and get in the RV, back right into the Blazer, all in the span of 30 seconds. Hit the front passenger corner. Dented in the hood, cracked the headlight surround, cracked the grill and pushed the fender back enough that the passenger door wont open. :angry1:
