Atl-atl's K5 Blazer Four Wheel Camper "The Crawlin Cabin" documentation thread!

Not much going on with the Blazer recently, just some minor maintenance and lots of driving time. There are some small upcoming projects that I want to tackle before spring like getting the AC running but thats about it. Still daydreaming about swapping in tons but I have so many other projects and that one can never seem to make it to a front burner. Anyway, my mom found a picture of me and my dad with the truck that started my love for squarebodies. This is some time around 1990. Dad bought the truck new and it was his favorite thing ever. It was done up all custom by a conversion company whos name I cant recall, it wasnt Geneva. Maybe somebody on here knows what it is. It had engraved woodwork all throughout the inside depicting scenes of ducks on a pond. It was so incredible. We road tripped all over the country in this rig. Ive been trying to find one just like it to buy back and give to my dad but its so rare because it was a 3rd party conversion. One came up for sale last year on BaT or CarsnBids with the same paint scheme but it was tan. I should try to find the listing because I bet I could find out more about the truck. I dont know why my dad sold it but I wish he hadnt.

Looks like a StarCraft conversion. The stripes, body kit and the wheels. The engraving might have been a customer requested feature.
Oh man, its a Starcraft for sure! After googling and seeing some interior pictures thats exactly what it was, thanks!!! Holy memories flooding back right now.

I was going to say, I had a couple of conversion vans and they had the same vibe

Ducks unlimited maybe?

Did they actually partner with GM or whatever and make a version? I ask cause I seen an OBS Suburban for sale one time and the guy claimed it was a Ducks Unlimited conversion but the pics just looked like somebody simply slapped Duck Unlimited stickers on it and called it a "conversion" and it wasnt actually a thing but I could be wrong. I didnt reach out to him and ask or anything.

I believe all these conversion vehicles are purchased by the company and outfitted then sold directly if they were big enough or through dealerships

No Ducks Unlimited trucks were outfitted for the outdoors men, esp those who liked to hunt water fowl. You would know it was a special truck from the out side.

Im planning to bring the Blazer to the Vintage Offroad cars n coffee at FourtillFour in Scottsdale tomorrow morning. If anyone is around and hasnt been it should be a good turnout, weather is perfect!

Heres another fun one. So I got in the truck this morning, rolled the windows down, it started raining so I rolled them up and turned the wipers on. Drove to the coffee shop and it stopped raining so I rolled the windows down again. Get my coffee get back in the truck, drive to my shop and the windows wont roll up.

Pull the door panel, inspect the switch, put dielectric on all the connections, nothing. So I jump the wires to the motor(at the switch) and both windows roll up just fine. Whats weird is, there is power at the switch, verified by multimeter. Both driver and passenger door window switches are relatively new. Theres something going on in between the window switches. Is there a power window relay somewhere that I cant find?

Even if there is a relay, that doesnt really explain my problem because there is power at the switch. The red wire is the hot coming in, it has power when ignition is on. The switch seems to be in good working order, why would it not work? Bad ground? Im lost.

Also, of course there are no window switches in stock in Phoenix for a 1978 Blazer. There are for newer trucks but they have 6 pins in the back instead of 5 like mine. Im tempted to pick one up and see if i can make it work anyway.

Could it actually be an ignition switch issue? My ignition switch seems like it just failed in the “acc” position. Cant get the key out and cant start the truck.

Maybe. Another issue is the rod that goes from the lock cylinder to the switch at the bottom of the column is broke or bound up.

Or, since you converted to a manual while still having an automatic column, the shift collar on the column moved which will keep the lock cylinder from rotating. Try rotating the collar counter clockwise to put it back into the “park” position.
