How much money did you guys put into your bombed-up diesels? Just looking at what I'm getting myself into and what the trade-off is worth.

I have the itch to buy a Cummins 'cause the K3500 454's fuel mileage is keeping my wallet dry. I might have a line on a '94 this weekend though.

You`ll get a 100 different answers on this but theres much to be had power/fun wise with mods such as injectors, fuel plates, upgraded pumps which range from $1500 + - $300 or so depending on mods. Keep in mind make one thing stronger and another area can become the weak link. Personally Ive had 3 Cummins dodges, two 93`s, one was a 4x4 dually and the other a 2wd ,also a 94 4x4,I safely would say Id never own another Dodge truck again. I cant imagine feeding a 454 but with all the endless parts failures the 22MPG part was eaten by repairs and parts costs in short order. The now 07 chevy 2500 6.0 will smoke any of the 3 we had pulling our stock trailer up hills, granted it only gets 13 mpg and the diesels got maybe 14/15 loaded and 21+ empty.

I am also think strongly about buying a '92 cummins 4x4 but to get a nice truck like that is going to be about $6000. I would really like a newer duramax but I am debt phobic. If I can find a nice duramax that doesn't break the bank I may end up going that route. The '92 I found is 3/4 ton 4x4 with like 118000 miles. 1 owner truck too. I looks clean from the pics but I would have to drive like 3-4 hours to go look at it. It has PW PL tilt. $5900. I would rather have a 1 ton but other than that it is exactly what I am looking for. I just don't want to spend that kinda money and regret not buying a duramax.

"bombed" is a relative term right.......bombed to you might be bearly out of stock for me. You can pick a HP number now that you want to make as a goal.........then throw it out the window in 1 month after you get hooked on diesel power. and it'll never be enough.

imo, don't bother with the 1st gen '89-93 VE pumped trucks. '94-'98 12v. and '96-'98 to break it down further.

grind you own fuel plate - free
3K GSK governor springs - $80-100ish......i have a spare 3000 rpm set of springs. :D
bump timing - free if you have the tools and know how. I don't know what a shop charges for that.
block waste gate - free
change delivery valves - 100 -200 in you can get them good used. or $250 for a new set of bigger DVs.
tune your fuel plate, Aneroid fuel control, and starwheel to suit your driving taste - free.

torque converter/ valve body upgrade - 1000-1600 for billet converter depends where you get it.
valve body - 300-500ish you can slam a shift kit in it. for way less. but the done up valve bodies from the pros are much more involved than any shift kit you can put in yourself.
clutch upgrade - depends what brand and how much power you want it to hold. my south bend ceramic dual disk was about $1500 and the 1 3/8" NV4500 input shaft was another $600. but good to 650-700 RWHP single disks clutches are way less.

guages intake and exhaust are almost a given to do 1st.

any of my present or former 6B engines would eat any gasspot for lunch any day of the week. my old 24v ISB pulled down 15-18mpg @ 600rwhp loaded.

I see your problem though, looks to have been 2 '93 VE powered trucks. and a 160hp '94 truck.

you can't even compare a 1st gen Ve pumped leaf sprung lumber wagon dodge to any duramax Chevy. you have to really want a '89-93 dodge to go out and buy one. if your mulling about a Dmax don't even bother with a 1st gen dodge. you'll regret it immediately.

go drive both locally see for yourself.
