So my 2002 Allroad with the 2.5 TDI has been acting a little quirky lately and I'd like to get it sorted out before a couple of long road trips coming up and also to sell it before we move.

When started cold (sitting all night, temp around 34* F) it has been blowing quite a lot of bluish smoke and smells very strongly of diesel. Typically it has a little miss while it's cold too. The smoking and miss stop pretty quickly - maybe 30 seconds, especially if I bring the RPMs up a bit. Otherwise, it seems to be running alright. No lack of power or anything, but sometimes it just feels slightly off. Hard to explain really. But I have noticed that even when warm and not smoking it still smells like diesel more than it used to.

Honestly, I don't know that much about diesels so I'm not really sure what to look for here. I'm not opposed to taking it somewhere (though I am fundamentally against paying someone else to work on my stuff), but wanted to check here for some suggestions first.

Thanks in advance.

I was wondering if that wouldn't help it too. Though it always starts, and that wouldn't explain the diesel smell after its been running a while. Though with almost 300k km's on it, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt either.

My 01 jetta 1.9 tdi has a similar problem. It has 289,xxx miles on it. I gotta say that tdi's get props for longevity if this is the only problem at this milage.

I dont know the 2.5 but can tell you if it was a 1.9 Id be looking to see how much build up is in the intake low air flow and or EGR sticking.

OK, I can do that too. Is there a gasket kit to get when you pull the crossover pipe, or will I be able to reuse that? (if you happen to know)

Do an EGR delete. I don't know what the tard at VW was thinking when they decided to pump hot carbon directly into the intake from the sooty ass diesel exhaust. Let's take a trip to high school science class shall we? Now what happens when we take pure carbon and add lots of heat and pressure?:doah:
