to help break the ice....

i've been involved in car audio in one way or another for about 20 years. i don't know everything and i've probably forgotten more than i remember. i've played with many brands and have done more product research than i could list.

i am still involved in audio on the side at times. while i can and am known for building nasty ground pounders, SQ is my gig. so the times i am able to cruise by, i'll chime in where i can. and the saying goes... bung holes and opinions, everybody's got their own. but i do realize that my opinion is just an opinion, equal to everyone else's opinion. and i'm not going to flame war over an opinion like seems to be common from a lot of the hard core audio guys (in general- no reference to this forum). so have no worries there.

i haven't started the work on my 82 blazer yet, so i don't have anything to show there. for a heads up and example of what it will entail, i had some midwoofers custom made for me by an uber high end european build house to match up to some uber high end tweeters i am personally building by hand. yes, fabbing my own parts and not assembling parts from a chinese subway sandwich style speaker parts supplier.

here is an example of some of my work. fitting for this site, this i did for a guy with a 95 blazer...

Nice work. Look forward to seeing your Blazer build. I have been throwing around ideas for a stereo in mine but I have two things. Has to be weather proof/resistant and I want this sheite to pretty much theft proof.

Have you had any experience with marine speakers for boats? Thought about using those to cover the weather issue, but I am still trying to figure out the design to keep theives from helping themselves to my subs. :haha:

Texas.... the best thing to make it theft proof is to use your right to shoot those P.O.S. and weed them out of society. :D

Not even in boats have I generally used marine equipment. Sure there might be some internal coating to hinder oxidation on the metal, but I haven't found it really crucial.

What you do need to pay attention to is speaker cone material. That's the biggest thing, polymineral, aluminum, etc.. As far as amps and HU's, to the most part I've used car audio gear there too. If you take on enough water to fry your gear, you've got bigger problems than your stereo.

Build your box with the subs downfiring. Use some long bolts to attach the box to the floor and so that you have to access the bolts from underneath the vehicle.

Hey, welcome.

I used to do some competition stuff a long time ago, and now I am usually happy with the stock stereo.

Anyway, one thought for subwoofers that I always really liked was the Infinity powered 10" sub. Not quite an isobaric solution, but it has an active and passive driver and sounded great in my old Blazer. It screws down to the floor and if you put it real close to the side with a ratchet screwdriver, most thieves can't get it out (at least that is what happened when my truck got broken into). It's self-powered, but absolutely NOT weatherproof. I'm going to get one for this Blazer when I do the stereo, and am thinking about putting a little metal rollbar type of thing over it to further protect from theft.

Only $180. :)

... forgot to mention, for boxes i build for boats, cut throughs in trucks, etc, there are a few options depending on the degree of protection you want.

you can fiberglass resin coat and paint them, herculiner bedliner coat them, or resin them for a good seal and then bedliner over that.

the bedliner is also nice because the box can take a beating from things smacking on it.

it's saltwater environments for the boats that eats stuff up, not actually gear getting wet usually...

i should expand on this, i left it a little short.... what i mean is for wet or high humid environment, to stay away from paper cones, or other other cones that can absorb moisture.

Thanks for the advice, I think you saved me from getting speakers I didn't want just because i thought they'd not get ruined. :D

That is a great idea. I like to keep the top off the Blaze as much as possible so internal security is where I need to focus just like that.

You mean with something like this:
