I've been inquiring around my area on paint quotes/estimates for my fullsize blazer. I haven't brought it by any shop yet, but I'm getting quoted around $3-4 grand. I've never had a vehicle painted before but if I'm going to pay that much,...I would hope it would be top quality work. Is this the average or how much is the norm for a good paint job? Whatever info will be helpful,...

Depends on what they are doing for you. A quote doesn't mean squat unless they have the truck there and go over it with you.

What kind of paint, coats, color change from original, clears, etc etc all make a difference. Macco will do it for $500. My Dads truck was thousands, but he wanted Indigo Blue with a little pearl, damn good base coat, sanding, clear, blah blah blah. Not many people would even know it's a custom color.

Mid-grade paint is around 3-4K....Depending on body work.
Paint is expensive.

I've seen jobs w/ 12k in materials alone.
But, that's all PPG candy, and custom, etc.

Assuming it is your 87 (what appears to be) primer gray Blazer, I would say that is probably low for what you will end up paying.

They are giving you an estimate based on what you are telling them needs to be done. Since you don't yet have enough posts (go into the Lounge and raise your post count to 15 and you can link pictures), I can't say for certain from the tiny pictures I have seen, but if there is body work involved that quote is going to be low. Either that or they are going to use a less costly paint.

To give you an idea, the PPG stuff I am looking at is $150 for a quart of gunmetal gray with a touch of pearl in it, the larger gallon is a more basic blue and is only going to cost about $200, with the clear coming in around $250 a gallon. That is just paint cost, not counting my time and labor on the prepwork.

For a fullsize like the Blazer, I would say that 3-4k is not a bad price, but none of these shops is going to be able to give you an exact quote until they actually see the truck. They are giving you an approximation based on other vehicles that are similiar to how you describe yours.

You get what you pay for. So many factors involved. Type of paint and how much body work is needed. I just finished painting my suburban and I'm about 550 into materials, that includes my base/clear and two types of primer. I went on the bare minimum and used PPG's economy paint line omni. Now for as much labor I had into it due to the failing and peeling paint being so bad it would have cost alot to have it done.

I would really ask to see some of their work in that price range, and what the vehicle looked like before work began...you need to compare apples to apples, and see what the final outcome was on a few before feeling confident enough that yours would turn out the same.
As mentioned, a paint job can run from a few hundred to 10K +....depends on what you got to start with, and how you want the end result to look like.

A top quality job (show finish) would more than likely put you around 10K. Of, course this depends on the amount of body work needed. At the price you are being quoted, sounds like a normal body shop job, (factory finish), as if you wrecked it, and insurance was paying to restore to factory state. You also need to think about what you are going to do with your Blazer before you spend any money on it. If you are going to wheel it a lot, I would not put that kind of money into it. You can save yourself money by lining up the panels yourself, taking care of the dents, and getting rid of any rust. If you want a long lasting job, do it right, but you will still pay for quality at the shop. My blazer is a trail truck/drive it to work from time to time. I will be using Dupont Nason in a factory color. Easy to repair by the color code, and I'll have around $600 with primer/base/clear.
