Gonna look at a truck tomorrow, it'll have either a TH350 or a TH400 and I can't remember the difference in pan shape. Knowing for sure which it has will obviously affect my judgement of what the truck is actually worth...so any help would be appreciated.

Rene

th350 is like a square with one end cut on an angle. Th400 kinda looks like the state of texas

It was a TH400. Rest of the truck didn't really thrill me though. OK cab (3+3) OK doors, crap interior, POS smallblock, no hydroboost, 2WD, 73-80 dash (bleh), Box OK on outside, rot issues inside and underneath though. Oh yeah, 3/4 ton not one ton.

Price was OK.

It's still a possibility for what I plan for it...but I have my eye on another one that looks to be a better deal. One ton, 3+3, 454 on propane, TH400, less rust, also 2WD. Same money. Problem is the guy is a bit of a Craigslist flake and isn't very good at the whole communication thing.

Thanks guys!

Just to note that a 3/4ton crewcab still has the tall frame / skinny spring perches ... the front coils are the same as an SRW C30, and the rear leafs are from a mid-range C30 as well... 1-ton sixpacks got the crazy rear springs, like the 10-leaf with top-overloads.

Anyway, point being that a C/20 crewcab is easily made into a C/30, unlike a C/20 regular truck.

Aaron, good info to know. The 'tall' frame was a big plus for me so it's good to know the C20 6 pack has it too.

Sho nuff. My dually started out life as a C/20, but with new springs and the DRW conversion... voila!

So, I gotta ask: what do you plan to do with it? Does it involve dieselfication? :D

I screwed up my K5 build a while back...got it too hardcore and unstreetable. It also got really difficult for my kids to get into and out of the rear seat area.

My 'plan' is to source a crew cab and build something more of a weekend warrior that is still easy and comfy enough for the four of us. The 6 pack cab gets that part covered. The K5 will donate the diffs, some suspension stuff, NV4500/203/205 steering column, pedal assembly etc etc.

The Crew cab will donate a frame, possibly front clip, Cab, etc.

The plan is to cut down the wheelbase to 133" (+/- 2" ) and cut the bed down to approx 60-64" or so. I may cage the inside of the cab...still TBD.

Engine I'm not 100% decided on. If I find a big block crew cab I'll run that with a 770 cfm truck avenger. This isn't something I'd ever drive often enough to have fuel economy matter much. If I find a decent crew cab but it has a small block I'll throw that in the nearest ditch and keep the 6.2.

Looking at running some TrXus MT's in a 38" flavor on some H2 rims.

I'd like to stay with 4" of lift, so the current Alcan's will be going.

Where's the K5 going?

Inquiring minds want to know.
Dumb random thought that came through my mind just now...is this still the K5 you brought up from Texas...or was that even you?

The K5 will donate a lot to the Crew cab, then the rest will get parted out or sold outright. The tub is decent for a wheeler...rust free and no really big dents.

That was me that bought that K5 from Texas. I bought it after getting rear ended by a drunk in Portalnd OR. I got the TX K5 home, started working on it, but when I pulled the windshield out I got curious and decided to double check the VIN to the TX title. Found out it was off by one digit...:angry1:

The CK5er I bought it from wouldn't help me get the problem sorted out, and I couldn't sort it out myself from here. I ended up having to sell it for parts and took a loss on it. Then another CK5er (Talldogg...remember him?) offered me a rust free '74 rolling shell for free. I picked that one up from San Diego in August 01. That one I had stored for 18 months, but I ended up having to sell it to make a mortgage payment.

In the end I ended up spending about 40 hours of my time fixing the damage to the original K5 and that's the one I still have.

Road trips are fun, so it's not that bad.

Hahaha...wow...oy...where to even start...yow....lots of traveling. Needless to say you're well familiar with the north-south western US highways I take it?

Eh, at the very least someone could take the body and frame and fit some large tires with even a stock suspension after all of the cutting you've done. I say you keep the 6.2L though.

Right now I'm about 50/50 on keeping the 6.2. I've never owned a big block, and I'm sure there is a certain fun factor there. OTOH the 6.2 has been an awesome powerplant for wheeling so far, especially with the manual tranny behind it.

We'll see.

Step one is find a decent Crew cab first. A lot of other decisions will be based on what I can get that is within my budget.

I did find another 6 pack last night...looks a little rough as far as paint goes. Upside is the TBI and already manual tranny. Downside is I'd need to source a bed. Upside is those 'logger boxes' get a decent buck. I might call and go look at it. The price is right.

If the K5 ever gets sold in drivable shape with the drivetrain lemme know. Pretty doesn't matter as much as solid body and that engine. Never been up to that part of Canada or the PNW.

How did I guees you would say that? ;)

Nothing is written in stone yet as far as the final iteration of the build is concerned. There is a big part of me just dying to know what a doubler and a granny geared manual behind a diesel is like in the rocks...I never did get to wheel it after the doubler install. :doah: :eek1:

OTOH I have my 83 with 6.2 diesel as a daily driver already, so I get my diesel fix every day...and get the good economy where I really need it.

To put it in perspective, the last year my K5 was a daily driver I put 6500 miles on it. So, economy on this build isn't high on the list.

Rene

Yeah, but I'm talking off road economy. Gassers are still fuel-sucking pigs offroad. When I went hunting last year I burned through 2 tanks of fuel off road. Most of the driving was at low to moderate speed, your basic trail driving. Earlier that year I was on a two-day wheeling trip where I burned 3/4 tank. The guys with BB rigs were worried about running out of fuel before making it back to camp on the first day. Total distance traveled was maybe 60 miles, so the BB guys were getting maybe 3MPG off road. Compare that with what your diesel gets off road and you see why I have the bias that I do. I just wish mine was done :(
