Going to pick up a new cooler and wanted to get some opinions on what you guys are using. Currently it runs a t-350 but I want to get a cooler to support a 4L80E. So I am going big.

Do I get a remote mount one with a fan even if I put it up front?

The ones with the fans aren't not much more costly and it seems like a good idea for low speed, and idle conditions.

I have had good luck with derale stuff before and think it it would be fine here as well.

Cost isn't a huge concern as the most expensive ones I have seen are around $250, I would spend that for a nice unit.

Thoughts?

I have used the fan ones before. You can get away with a much smaller cooler with a fan.

Doesn't derale have one with a fan already on it? If so I have used that one on a C4 in a bronco. It works amazing almost enough for me to switch to it. But I wasn't really having issues.

My vote is for one with a fan

I converted my AC condenser into a trans cooler, it was free and it's bigger than any trans cooler you can buy.

I have always wondering about doing that, but as I was just talking smack in Adams thread, the little lady has requested AC to go back into the truck, so that would be out for me...

Something about being tired about her hair blowing around....

How well does that work in cold weather...? I know a tranny needs some heat to get decent oil flow.

Do you have a trans temp gauge? Or just looking for general cooling.

That derale worked awesome in an early Bronco engine bay. Which if you don't know is an oven.

Although I have always been a bigger is better. My power steering cooler is larger than most guys transmission coolers

I do have a trans temp gauge. But the truck isn't together yet so I don't know what it will run temp wise. Just trying to get all my parts together for my next round of wrenching. Just getting trans stuff now. But I want to get a cooler that will work in the future as well as now.

just fyi on temps .

I run k30 with 4.10 / 35 tires / and tbi 350 bone stock / th400/205 .

stock cooler in trans only and remote filter with temp sender in housing . plumbed in to hot line from trans so I know how hard I am working it .

90% the time its with in 10 -15* of rad temps .

now the big added in factor . winter time 8ft fisher hd snow plow . only gets maybe 20* over rad temp .

when I rebuild here shortly ( doing now ) I plan on cooler and temostat cooler valve in it for best of both worlds.

Why not just a heat sink cooler? I did one of these for my hydro assist and am planning on just putting one on the frame rail when I do my engine trans swap.

a stacked plate design will be vastly more efficient than that Derale tube/fin you posted... fan, or no fan...
