The cab and back seat of my K5 Blazer doesn't get enough heat from my factory in-dash heater. Has anyone installed an additional heater in their blazer? I'm considering installing one behind the back seat. Thoughts or suggestions?

How do you not get enough heat? I practically have to turn my heater off to prevent myself from being cooked to death.

You probably have a problem with your cooling system. Either your HVAC system controls aren't opening the correct "door" or are not allowing the heat mode to come on fully, or you are running the wrong temperature thermostat.

My truck had a few broken parts under the dash. The cable which connects to the temp level had broken off at the end on top of the heater core. The result was cold air all the time. I used a zip tie to re-attach it.

I then also noticed the "tab" which opened the blend door had broken off, but this was inside the housing so you have to take about 4 bolts off and yank the front of the heater box housing off to see it. Just remove your glove box, then remove the bolts from the lower front of the air housing and yank it right, down, and out. Then you can see the tab which opens the blend door.

If you're running a 160 thermostat (or none) you can expect virtually no heat. Plus it's not good for your engine. Get at least a 180. If you have TBI you should be running 195.

If you've got AC I've got nothing to add over what JJ says. If you don't have AC (is that even possible out there? lol) then you might not have the heavy duty heater.

My truck gets plenty warm with the HD heater option. The standard (non-AC) heater setup is woefully inadequate for the cab size of a K5 though.

i have non a/c cab on my truck and can reheat food on the dash and floor.

plowin snow for few hr's last week up here in the north east i got the floor dry / boots dry / and had driver window down almost whole time.

check for full function of the controls and also pull the heater core hoses and hook up garden hose to each and back flush out to remove any sediment that might be pluging heater core. i have had to do the backflush a lot on car's / trucks up here.

some guys herew have run the summit racing $189 heater unit and say thay get roasted out big time by it. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-991106

Probably your blend doors are broken, Vac is unhooked, mice hotels or your heater core is just plugged up and the entire system is in good need of a nice flush and new antifreeze. But If that doesnt suit your needs some Suburbans came with a factory rear heat option. It basically just ran hardline along the frame and into the cab with a little heater core and a small fan that I believe only blows one speed. It turns on when you turn on the heat and fan, but not the A/C. You could look into that, my brothers came with the rear heat option, and mine came with the rear A/C. Doubt you could get both in the same truck, but you might get lucky in a junkyard.

My kids say the Blazer has "the best heater ever!" They are the two that drive it to school each day so they should know. It was 3 degrees here this morning......

If for some reason your's works OK, you could try and retrofit the rear heater from a suburban (once you are able to locate that rare baby!)

Edit: I see you are from Dallas too! Something must be wrong with your system. I didn't even think you needed heaters in TX!!

I tend to agree with what has been said above, an AC truck has an awesome heater.

Non AC trucks bring the suck in the ones that I have been in, even with everything new and working well.

In blazers specifically, in pickups if you have an AC unit you will never put the fan above 2 :D

also i have found if the heater core inlet hose is at the back of the motor on the intake i think it gets hotter than up at the front of the intake . since the back of the motor run's a bit hotter than the front.

I had a '90 Blazer I bought new. The heat was never that good, luke warm at best, and it only got worse as time went by. We had it dealt with severl times while under warranty, but never really fixed the problem. The coolant was always rusty looking. I flushed and flushed that system and never got it clear. I went through a few radiators and a couple heater cores. I had friends who are top notch mechanics check it out. The Blazer was just not meant to have heat. Seriously,by the time it was 18 years old with 190,000+ on it I had to drive on longer drives with my full outdoor gear on and a sleeping bag over my legs. That sumbeech was a cold'n!
My '85 has a soft top and I just drove it to town after it sat a couple few weeks. It's in the 20s and town is only 5-6 miles. It was cold getting in and warmed right up to toasty

Left mine running in the snow once. Heater on high. 2 hours of just idling. We got in and could barely hold onto the roll cage. Was still warm 5 hours later. Nice and toasty warm. It is an A/C model.

Rear Suburban unit and it it's a great rear window defogger.:D

My buddy wired in a 12 volt electric heater to a toggle switch when the main heater wasn't enough. Could also Be used to heat up the truck while the engine warmed up to normal temp. His wife used it as a hand warmer. Lol

where would this mount in the K5?

I'd say in the back on the floor. Either on the left side or right side (if spare tire is not there). I had it in one of my suburbans and it was located on the back floor, on right side (passenger).

It does get in the way though for sure! Couldn't lay a 4x8 sheet down without hitting the rear heater.

So if the coolant isn't heating the front heater core, why would it heat a rear one?

casue its pluged ? or restricted flow ? bad t-stat or to low temp one.

second heater unit will hook up and run its own hoses.

check the basics like we all posted in the begining first.

and that ebay link to oem nos units is nice but CRAZY money :eek1:

It doesn't make much sense to add another heater without first diagnosing the problem with the first one. It's a waste of time, money, and effort.
