Awesome 1972 C/60 grain truck

We have a 88 c70. It has disk brakes front and back! Interior is minty. 366 5 speed with a 2 speed rear. 16 foot grain box. Truck is in really nice shape we bought it at a auction 10 years ago or longer. I think it was 18 thousand.

I honestly don’t think it is that useful. Under powered And small. It’s ok for hauling fertilizer.
I would love to have one for moving gravel and fill dirt but that box they came with does limit you to 3 to four yards I guess. I can see how it would be a little light for a modern farm

They are perfect for what they were designed to do and the economy at the time. They aren't practical for a grain farm anymore when people are pushing 250 bushels an acre with corn. But for a small farm and general hauling it will suit me just fine. The 366 won't win any races but they last longer than most any other big block gas engines.

People bash on the 366 all the time, but they are far superior to the equivalent year small block.

Don’t get me wrong, I like those trucks and ours. What pissed me off is that it was mint when we got it. It has been sitting outside and not used a lot and it is deteriorating. Sad if you ask me.
Not my fault…. Family farm…. I’m just a bitter person these days.

# venting.

Yes, I guess that's what I'm asking. Can you get a regular 454 from a light duty truck and drop it in, since the medium duty engines are harder to find. Is that a simple way to give it more oompf or is it a bad idea?

I am pretty sure all BBC have the same bellhousing pattern but I believe the tall deck blocks have more torque down low which is what these trucks need.

Any big or small block will bolt up. The 454 will have more torque but the TD366's and TD427 have 4 ring pistons, forged crank and rods, and a much bigger cooling system on them. That's why they last, pretty much built like a diesel before the big hp diesels took over.

The 366’s are pretty easy to come buy, usually they about give them away.

Yea we will see next week what all is wrong with the engine. The owner says the guy he got it from said it had a bent rod, I am going to go on hope and say its a bent pushrod or something else simple.

Its been quite a while since I've been on here, sold my Suburban and haven't had much cool going on. But today I pretty much stole this C/60 from an auction on Big Iron. $975 for it, and I figured it would go for 3-4K due to the perfect cab. 366 that hasn't run in a while, looks like a bad coil and some plug wires, plus a leaking rear main from the inspection cover in the cab. We are going to use it on our small farm here in Alabama mostly for gathering wood chips, hauling hay, and as a flatbed. Way cheaper than a trailer!

Just be careful, that vehicle is equipped with a POWER-TAKEOFF :saweet:

Engine is broke free but is binding up in one spot during rotation. #1 rod bearing is shot, #2 is decent. Also weird double nut fix on the rocker arm. I’m going to pull the mains tomorrow and see what the bearings look like. That rod bearing looks oil starved, but the pan had fresh oil with an empty filter?

Double nut most likely the stud is pulling out of the head.
Had this on my 350.

All that work and still not sure if its got more problems . . . Grab a good used runner 366 and run it .
I may down the road, the endgame with this now is get it running as cheaply as possible. Replacing the rod bearing and seeing if that stops the binding, if it does its getting fired up and seeing what happens. I'd go through this engine before grabbing a used one, devil you know deal.
