axle id?

im looking at buying axles from a guy i know. i can't figure out for sure what the rear axle is. the housing looks like a 12 bolt, but its an 8 lug FF i read the axle guide in the tech colum, and nothing else there looks like it. i doubt its the original axle since it is under a 65 stepside 4x4. that was supposedly built for tractor pulls by the guy who sold it to the guy i know. any ideas i can get pics later on. if needed. any held would be great.

Look for a code somewhere on the axle.... gm puts em on the passenger side on the top of the axle tube. You can call a dealer and they will tell you what it is.
