Back from Rausch Creek.....feeling humble.

yes it is the burb...you dont think ill have enough gear w/513s???i have no skid plate or no rocksliders...i have no money for either or time im still trying to get this thing togher for the trip...

Kurt's right......5.13s by themselves are not really deep enough. With your setup your crawl ratio is sitting at 66:1. My crawl ratio last time out was only 40:1!! :yikes: The problem with too little gear is that you can't give the truck any throttle to climb rocks precisely. Every time you give it gas it reacts too much and bounces the truck around and you lose traction.

Ideally, with a 38" tire you'd want a crawl ratio of about 120:1 (this is based on a rule-of-thumb that suggests 1 inch of travel per 1 RPM of the engine). Effectively what that requires is a crawl ratio equal to your tire circumference.....in your case, a 38" tire has a circumference of 119 inches, so a crawl of 120:1 would be just about ideal.

With that being said, don't fall into the trap of believing that you can't wheel until everything on your truck is "perfect". Just be realistic about the limitations your truck has....and pick your trails accordingly. There are plenty of steep and rocky trails at Rausch that will destroy your bodywork and smash the underbelly of your truck (without skidplates) so it's up to you to choose wisely when you head out to the trails...

well im sure i wont be to cocky up there...this will be my first time on the rocks...im usually a mud runner...as far as gear ratio goes...mabye one day i will go doubler or something but right now $$$ is limited...i have enough to get everything i want to get done to the truck but i have to save a good deal back cause im sure that im gonna spend a preety penny on gas,food,ect....with all that being said will i be seeing you guys up there...im sure there will be plenty of people there to steer me in the right direction...if it goes back on the trailer in pieces than so be it...

Oh, and I almost forgot.....bring a chainsaw if you've got one. Seriously.

Rausch is actually looking for people to help clear the debris, stumps, etc. from the trails.....and will give you free access to the park in exchange for doing some clearing and cutting.

Once you see a few of the new trails (with 18" stumps everywhere) you'll understand that having a saw with you isn't really such a crazy idea!!!

well it will be getting packed up in the truck to go....anyway i can save a few bucks i will...thanks for the heads up....this will be the first run on 513s...escentially the shacke down run...i wouldnt be suprised to make it 2 feet down the trail and it break....the same for my buddy bring his truck...he has a jeep on 53s and rocks...its freakin huge...im preety sure he is gonna leave on the hook...

its about 290 miles..not really to bad when you think about it...it takes the same amount of time to get there as it would to get to the other side of va by tenn...oh we will look like a parade coming in prolly around 5 or 6 truck crew coming..

Looks like everyone had fun. I saw a lot of pics over on Pirate. Did anyone on here post about going, or was this all kept on the down low to keep us locals away? :D If you guys come down again make sure you let me know. I'll be there.

Greg72 what size tires are you running? The stumps aren't even that noticeable with bigger tires. I saw them when I was there this weekend but never got hung up on one.

Nope, not kept quite on purpose.
Posted several times about the "May" Rausch trip coming up, everybody's always welcome to come play. :D

We get there at least two/three times a year, this was the "bring the wives" trip. (May every year)

Greg and I are talkin' about attending the July 13th event...nothing for sure yet but maybe.

38's and only one locked axle.....not quite the same as Fo-Dee-Fos!

Plus, I'll admit I wasn't spotting myself well....hitting a stump directly with the pumpkin is 100% my fault anyway.

Someday then I'm on the Mog axles (and 38's) I'll have the same pumpkin clearance as the 44" tire crowd (about 16" clearance), so my lousy spotting won't matter as much. :D

I keep discussing attending that event, but Bloomsburg is the same weekend along with the fact that Werock will be there. It may be very crowded.

there are tons of trails you can do in your truck. We drove Julians tow rig and trailer down H trail. With 38's and a locker you can even do Rock Creek, it will just be really challenging. The biggest problem you are going to have is the sheer size of your rig. stay off the blacks and reds and you will have a great time.

go to RC i just got to see you guys and a day of riding is better then a day of looking at chrome trucks  and i will have my truck working and some new parts to (and dont think 4link dont have the cash)

hey greg im doing alot of playing around with the crawl calculator here....im working a rig and trying to figure which trans/tranfer case would be the best bang for the buck...im think the 465/208 would put me right at about 166 to 1 if im reading this right in granny gear...would that be the best route to go???

what kind of calculator are you using? I know you have 5.13's and low in a 208 is 2.72/2.62 but last time I checked first gear in a 465 was not 12 to 1.

im using this one http://www.4lo.com/calc/gearratio.htm...but according to this i only have 30 to 1 right now.....in one of gregs earlier posts it said "ideal"would be like 150 to 160 to 1.....but even with a doubler in that calc it still only gives me 50 to 1 so i was thinking that mabye that was in 2wd???i dunno a 465 is 6 to 1....
