Back In the Saddle Again

whoever sealed this up last laid the bead far too inward. There was no squeeze out and leaked. However, the fluid that did come out was extremely clean. So, I’m sure it was serviced recently. They just didn’t know how to seal it properly.

To paint a better picture of how the RTV was put on it was just inside the housing on the cover. There was little to no sealant between the cover and the housing.

The only mark I see stamped on the ring gear is GM80
Should be a set of numbers like 41 10. 41 is the tooth count on the ring gear, 10 is the gear count on the pinion.

Keep rolling the ring gear over and you should see it stamped into the outer edge.

I have found that the back window can only be down about 2" or less to keep from pulling exhaust in at some speeds. I haven't had a problem so far with breaking a window, but was told that a hard impact at the rear bumper will break it if it's all the way up. I have been trying to keep it down about an inch. I don't care for it letting dust in by having it lower.

Yeah, my top doesn’t have any rubber to protect the window. So it rattles against the fiberglass groove. My Soft topper is coming in. My Jimmy had the exhaust exit behind the rear tires and I never even smelled it. And the Jimmy didn’t have a evap can either.

Ahh. Mine has enough of the channel rubber that it doesn't rattle. I understand your concern.
I have always had my exhaust out the left rear, behind the tire, but I can smell it if the window is down too far. I haven't had any other K5 to compare to.

I’ve never had a K5 with a hard top and I always rolled the soft top all the way up. I’m wondering if that allows more airflow and makes it less noticeable then.

I believe so. The '72 that I had was fine to drive with the top off.
