Back In the Saddle Again

Don't put rtv on gaskets, use aerosol high tack on both surfaces or 3M super trim spray adhesive. For all other rtv areas use only The Right Stuff. Just my experience from 20 yrs as a mechanic.

Yeah, I don’t put RTV on gaskets. The PO did put RTV on everything. It wouldn’t surprise me if these heads don’t actually have gaskets are just RTV’d to the block.

Hmm never tried 3m adhesive on gaskets, my go to is gaskgasinch. back in the day copper coat for head gaskets and intake. But our company personal hygiene section banned copper coat. They were charged with finding "good" chemicals that wouldn't have us dieing at work.
I do like the right stuff, not sure the value is there for hobbyist. If your only going to an intake then not need rtv for 6 months, the right stuff will be bad by the time you need it again. I did see they are making a small can but even that is to big for an intake.

I do the half caulk tubes and squeeze a bit out the end to let it harden as a easily removed plug and it lasts a long time.
3m spray adhesive will have you wanting a 90 degree die grinder with some brown roloc disc's or a pneumatic gasket scraper. It works really good.

As was expected. This took hours to get the intake swapped over. I spent 3 hours scraping the RTV from the heads. He RTV’d both sides of the intake gaskets all the way.

But I got it done. New performer intake on, new heater hoses as well as new valve covers and gaskets just cuz why not.

Test drove it and it’s purring like a kitten. Definitely feels better in the lower RPM range and I’m 100% certain this fixed the vacuum leak. Starts quick and idles way better. I can tell it’s going to be much easier to dial in the carb now.

Was test driving last night and while turning I hear a big “thunk”. This morning I have my dad roll the steering wheel back n’ forth while inspect the steering linkage and components. Found my driver side top ball joint is shot. So I need to get this front axle freshened up and stuffed under the truck sooner than later.

Well, was driving back to work from my ear doctors appointment today and my truck loses all fire. Started up twice and got it coasted into a nice parking spot. Call my pops for a ride back to work. Get back to my truck after work and I’m getting no fuego. Test the wire coming off Distributor to ignition with key on getting 12.1v get a tow from my favorite tow truck driver. Joked with him that my truck spends more time on his rig than on the road. Get it home. Tried swapping coil in cap. Same condition. I can smell burnt electronics in the cap/dist. Swap in new distributor. Fires right up. Can’t trust them Chinese distributors!
