my younger son brought the truck back yesterday afternoon and said it went from making a noise to sounding like the drivers side front wheel was going to fall off within 10 miles. it has alot of play and is clearly bad. i've only done older model wheel bearings- it looks like the modern stuff is pretty simple, just bolt on and deal with the wheel sensor wire. the parts store has a carquest brand hub in stock. i've got no experience with carquest parts and not sure if i need to look around for moog or timken or just go ahead and get it done which is what i would like to do. anybody familiar with carquest part quality?

Carquest typically has good parts. They are just a seller so take a closer look at their part, it could be a better brand reboxed.

You may want to YouTube wheeling bearing assembly replacement if you have dissimilar metals. Know the tricks before you start so you know what you’re getting into. I’m about to do the same repair on my Jeep.

Might want to inspect the wheel sensor before heading to parts store it could be damaged also.
Car quest had been on par with napa, I used to use a car quest store a lot 10ish years ago. They are a franchise so ea store is different.
As mentioned above could be a reboxed timkin trw moog part.
Would not hesitate, myself.
Job shouldn't be a big deal either. 2wd or 4wd?

i've watched a couple of videos, doesn't look too hard

4wd, wouldn't i get an abs light if the sensor was bad?

It should but sometimes takes several failures to set the light. If you scan the abs system, you might see a failure code, and the system is waiting to see if the failure code sets again in x amount of key cycles to illuminate the abs light.

The sensor ring may no longer be close enough for the pick up to see, or it could have chewed through the pick up, but not shorted it. One can't know with out inspection.

Thanks, I'll be sure to look it over

The hub and wheel speed sensor will be an assembly. They are easy peasy, pull the wheel, pull the caliper and rotor, pull the nut for the cv shaft and pull the 3 or 4 bolts on the back of the bearing and the sensor plug and it all comes right off. The dodge ones are the difficult ones that seize in the knuckle. Been a while since I did a GM one but they were easy. Just don't buy the cheapest part they off like a broke high school kid and you will be ok. I rotate between Carquest and Napa for all my fleet parts and they are both good.

I thought I remembered from the videos that the sensor came with the hub. Thanks, gonna get it done this afternoon if I have time

I bought AC Delco hub assemblies from RockAuto for my dually.

When yours went bad did they go bad quick or just make noise for a while?
I believe that there is always one here or there that can go quickly, instead of giving a long time of warning noise. I would bet that even a decent pothole hit could accelerate the failure.
These usually aren't difficult to swap. If the hub cover is on, it seems to help a good bit to minimize rust at the axle spline.

I have done many. It is a 1 hour job if everything goes OK. Buy the socket for the hub nut and make sure the new assembly comes with a nut. They are a 1 time use and not all hubs come with one. And I beleive the torque is 440 foot pounds. So a 2 foot breaker bar with a 220 pound dude standing on it.

Hub cover still on. It wasn't bad, just getting the old one off with the boot in the way. Need to upgrade my sockets and get a lift

I did have to buy a 35 mm socket, my metric set goes from 32 to 38 for some reason. I'll have to get a new nut. The hub didn't come with one. The new one is on, just have to torque everything and reroute sensor wire. Thanks for everyone's input
