Ok i need some input here

I just came back from the local gas sattion about a block away, on teh way back i started getting a bang and a shake from the reaar of my k5, this happened all the way home. I crawled under neath (of course the driveway is a lake right now) and the driveshaft seems ok, all the u joint cupas are there. its a 10 bolt rear any clues?

well i had to move it in the driveway, i no longer can shift into 4l or n
could it be my tcase is shot instead of the rear axle? i believe its an np241
thanks

If it has a gov-bomb in the diff, it just quit. You need to open it up and look in there before you do anymore damage

I had trouble with the carriers breaking in 10 bolts with 33 inch tires. It would snap the collar that the bearing rides on off. when they broke it would do just as you described.

yes its possible, unhook the drive shaft, put the tranny in neutral and spin the t-case by hand to see if it feels smooth. pull the drain plug and see if metal shavings come out in the oil.

Also try jacking up the rear end and spin a tire by hand, you may be able to hear or feel broken parts rolling around in there

ok we've determined it's the t-case thats shot
i ahve a friend with an np208 that came from his 70's k5
i believe his had a 700r4 as well, question is will the 208 bolt right in and be a direct replacement or do i need to change the front driveshaft or anything else?

thanks

If you had a 700r4/241 , then the 700r4/208 will directly bolt up . Your year was mechanical speedometer so your good to go there too .

Beware though that a used 208 is used . The parts that wear and cause shifting trouble could be worn if the case was wheeled or worked often ( in and out of 4wd ) .
