Has anyone swapped in a tailgate on a suburban that had barn doors? I'm looking for a burb and all I can seem to find are ones with barn doors. Any info, pics, or links would be great.

I think this is a first! Long story short, its pretty easy to do pre 1985. After that its an ass pain.

First time I ever heard anyone wanting a tail gate instead of barn doors. Pre 83 everything's the same iirc. After 83/84 the rear sill is different as the funeral homes and ambulance companies quit using suburbans for the most part.
I have a 86 and an 89 burb and have replaced the rear sill, bulkhead whatever it's called on the 89 after I bought it because the tailgate was going to fall off due to rust. Buy a barn door Sub and don't look back, you'll be happier with it in the long run.

My 87 burb has the tailgate. Wanna trade? I hate it, wish I could switch to barn doors. It sucks having to lower the window, climb on the hitch(without falling) and reaching inside to open the gate. Wish I would have bought the barn doors back in 1987. Good luck.

I wanted to put barn doors on my '85 Burb too, even found a nice paor cheap in the junkyard--but when I got them home with all the hardware, hinges, etc,I discovered there is a whole different body for tailgate VS barn doors--only pre '77 Burbs had all the mounting points for both ,and you could simply unbolt one and put the other ones on--after that they changed the tail pan area and didn't put any reinforcements where the hinges for barn doors go,and even though it is possible to use a donor Burb with the barn doors to convert one from a tailgate,I wasn't into carving up the floor and hacking the hinge mounts in to mine...way too involved for me,thank you...

I dont like tailgates, and power windows in them either--but I found a decent one 99% rust free to replace my rotten one that works for 40 bucks on CL...still wish I had "swinging doors" though....wish GM didn't decide to change them after '77 and left things alone!..
