BB Tech Inspection

I also think JMS had a great point on the phone tonight and as a trail leader, I'd like to have spec.s on every truck that wants to run with me.
I want to know, who has a CB, who's one ton, who's 1\2 ton on 46's etc.
It would help us decide on where in the group they should be.
That will happen next year. I had the information this year, but it was a new thing so I didn't really think about the potential uses we had for it. I had decided early on when the tech insp issue came up that I would start sending that info next year. Just bear in mind it's one more thing I've gotta get done before the event but I'll do the best I can to get the info out. Part of what will help is if I can get all the trail leader volunteers lined up sooner rather than later.

Don't worry I already have you and Travis down for a Trifecta run..... :deal:

WOW

The drama in this place over a few vehicles.

I remember a trip (years ago) up Holy cross trail in Co. where this black blazer on 10b axles showed up. I thought the guy was the biggest tool in the world and the blazer was a giant POS.

Care to tell me who that was?

BTW, this guy is a fun guy to hang with, and I actually have yet to see him with anything major broken. I have since reformed my "tool" opinion as well.

I remember a BB where I spent the day in Moab drinking cause I decided a quick trip up Moab Rim would be fun before going into pritchett. A broken Knuckle, ruined 42" swamper, and trail ready wheel caused my buggy to sit on the side of the trail until parts and tools made it to me. I was perhaps still a bit imbibed from the previous night when this happened. BTW nobody knew where I went either.

Did anybody come back and throw my ass under the bus. NO. they helped fix it in the dark and trusted that maybe I learned something.

This has been the way of the BB event for over 10 years now. All this talk of tech inspections, not letting guys go on trail rides etc. is BS IMO. How about some of you guys who are so good PM these trail tampons and help them get their junk together like it should be. I am quick to point out things on guys rigs that I don't like or I think is wrong, you want to know what the reaction is 90+% of the time. "It's fine, it's been like that for years, I have never broken that and I use this truck hard" Basically a F' you.

So, Fast forward. Sitting on the trail waiting for them to fix their junk that has never broken, been fine for years etc. I always make sure I interject a BUNCH of smart assed comments about how it must be fine cause they told me so earlier. Bottom line is that I hope they learn something, and come back again. If they don't that's their issue.

Tech. isn't going to do a thing but make someone take time out of their trip to look at everyones junk. Guess what, I wouldn't have passed a tech. ins. this year at BB. Hell I had to load tools on Saturday morning just to make sure I had enough stuff to change a tire. And that is literally all I had.

At least you had a spare tire....

'Cause I don't and was hoping I could use yours in a pinch. :p:

Hence the reason I think we should limit it to tow points battery tie downs spare tire (or plugs and the such) and having a strap.

I don't mind for the most part helping the "tool" on the trail out. Most of the time that person has tons of plans of what to do after the fact especially if they are given proper instruction. But if you don't have proper tow points and no strap don't expect me to run my strap around your bumper or where it might be possibly damaged.

I think if we do have a tech inspection it should be very minimal.

At least you had a spare tire....

'Cause I don't and was hoping I could use yours in a pinch. :p:

That would be fine, as long as when I needed something besides a 1/2" ratchet, two 3" extensions, and a 7/8 socket I could borrow it from you. I did have a jack too, and not just the kind I drink:haha:

...
I say check for the basics like tow points, CB (mine rarely works, I'd need to work on that), fire extinguisher, spill containment, roll over protection for occupants, seat belts, recovery gear, spare tire/repair equipment, first aid kit.

If nothing else these are items that make our organization more professional for checking, safety for occupants and equipment to minimize environmental damage when breakdowns happen....

...
I do think there should be a tech inspection of some sort, it doesn't have to be complicated, it can be very simple.
Battery tie down, Tow points front and rear, an actual tow strap, spare tire or means to plug a tire.
Now I think this should be done ASAP....

I seem to hear a consensus...

...All this talk of tech inspections, not letting guys go on trail rides etc. is BS IMO...

That's not quite what it's about.

By the way, I got to hear the "... this truck has done much harder things..." in person this year. Good to know.

I'm certainly not going to tell anyone how they should build their truck; I've been on the 'other side' for too long ("...can't lock a 10-bolt front...", "...can't wheel a truck with coarse-spline birfields, or God forbid lock it...", etc). I'm in fact getting more weary about sharing my experiences at all, and just try to make sure my truck has the best chance of completing the trail any given day.

It's always nice to know that isn't it.:haha:

The curb stops at City Market aren't nearly as hard as some make them out to be.:eek1:

After you mentioned it, I was thinking maybe City Market parking lot would make a good tech inspection/test area. Think the store manager would mind if a bunch of big trucks were out in the parking lot driving over the curb stops. :haha:

He won't, cause all the trucks are such big POS's that they will all have to be winched over the curb stops. No real damage that way, as long as someone has a working winch.

At least we would be able to have someone look at the winch though to verify it did or didn't work:popcorn:

Wait, there's a Trifecta for next year?!?!

Having gone 4 years now, I think I'd feel comforatable leading a few trails myself. When Brent's or Travis' truck break on Trifecta I'll take over leading it.:flipoff7:

...and before this gets taken the wrong way:

I think a simple tech inspection as mentioned above would be useful.

Maybe on Friday morning (the BFE parking lot would have worked well....), or at/just before the BBQ. Along the lines of "...ok, let's see your tow points, battery hold-downs, recovery gear, spare tire or plug kit, CB, fire extinguisher, first aid kit. Well, what trails are you running?"
If there's a concern, it could be expressed at that time without playing trail police - "...you know, we think you could have trouble on this trail because of xxx..." - at least the person is on notice after that.

But we would also gain some info that could come in handy in demonstrating to the BLM that we actually care about the environmental impact of a potential trail breakdown, and that - despite being such a small group - we're actively trying to install preemptive measures.

If the piles of dirt are in the BFE parking lot next year it would make a perfect tech inspection/test area. Pick your own line and drive through the piles so we can see the suspension flex etc. Not sure if they'll be there next year.

Well, what trails are you running?"
Not saying it was right but the above in Red is what I didn't have. Add to that a lack of tools and in all technicality I shouldn't have gotten more than 50' from the trailer. Would anyone tell me with a strait face that I couldn't run any trail in Moab?
Just playing devils advocate. I actually do agree with a safety gear check, add to that a small tarp and trash bags.

See above in Red

I think some of this really can be taken care of operationally. A list of items needed in the vehicle at all times. The above list is really it. Then perhaps just letting it be known that these things will be checked. You really don't have to look at every bodies stuff just hit up a few.
I am a firm believer in the buddy system. With my normal crowd that has now moved to Razors somebody in the group always had what we needed. But we didn't carry five spare tires, or plug kits- just one. Same with many of the tools and spares stuff. It's not about long term expedition stuff it's about having the right things in the group which we always seem to have.

That's where I think a lot of these things are being taken out of context. if you go out alone you better have a boat load of stuff. Go out with a group of 10 people and you can cut back on what you carry as long as someone in the group has it.

The problem we run into is that many of these guys are at the event alone, so they don't have a buddy. Next year on my trails, everyone is going to have a buddy. They travel together, stop together and if push comes to shove they get left together. If I leave you, I will come back for you with the stuff you need, promise. Between those two trucks they should be able to take care of themselves pretty well.

That is where I don't see this as a tech inspection as much as it is a safety inspection.

1st off, Zimm I was just giving you a hard time :D
I'm love to wheel with you but also still give you a hard time for the heck of it :thumb:

Lots of good points here but....
I've never carried a spare  I do carry some extra rubber and a tube w/beadlocks :dunno:.
But you don't have a CB that works :thumb:
I don't have a cage but I do have a hard top, not just a windshield. I feel fairly safe, not totally. I hope to get to this someday.
I've always ran a carb. but some can't get it dialed so a test run is good.
Yes we should have a basic requirement for carrying safety gear etc.
If you wheel, why wouldn't you have a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit etc. Flashlights, spot light and so on.
My only point is to find the guy with unmaintained trucks that can make it over the curb stops at city market. It's no fun for anyone to wheel with them. I don't think it should be dumped on trail leaders either. It should be a pre-group thing.
I also think JMS had a great point on the phone tonight and as a trail leader, I'd like to have spec.s on every truck that wants to run with me.

I don't want to get things too crazy or guys just won't show up.
Bring what you've got, drive it for what you built, not what you want it to be and bring it in shape to make it through what you choose.

Hey Dave, I took it all in good commeraderie, but seriously; experienced eyes on my truck I would welcome.

And that last statement sums it up pretty good....

if I don't pass tech I sure as hell aint turning around and driving 13 hours home. If people can invest the time, money and energy in getting to BB I'm sure they will come as prepaired as they feel they need to. Lets just go wheel. I carry enough spares, tool, fluids, first aid, snake bite kit, oil absorbent, fire extinguishers, straps, clevises, etc if someone doesn't have something they need just ask. I'm sure that goes with about anyone there.

Maybe I can find a really small oil filter adapter and just route it as a bypass and carry it for the "just in case"

Yeah, some of this is getting a little out of control.
A bunch of us back in the day won't have made half the trails we did with a tech. inspection but yet we did....no problems.
Maybe a simple solution would be to just have a list of everything you might carry on a run (well, not everything) but with a check list including HIGHLY recommended stuff when you register, we would then know what you've got, what you brought and if your really ready to hit a given trail. The list could be given to the trail leaders so they know.
We don't need to shut anyone down, just know where they're at.
It would make a good pre check list for us all and the guys that didn't know it was a
good idea to bring xxxxx would now know. Just a check list.
I'm sure most of you have one anyway, I do but don't always get everything done.
