i have my 1st 454 & i know nothing about it, a little info please.

1st-its what i believe to be a stock 87 tbi engine, i pulled it from a 87 2wd srw 3+3.

i want to put it in my 84 k10, and i'm ditching the tbi for a carb, when i look at intakes, they list oval & rectangular ports, which would a stock 87 bbc have?

while i got the intake off i thought i would loosen the oil pan and remove the timing cover for a new cam & lifters & timing chain....nothing radical, something like comp cams xtreme energy 264 or 268, would it have a roller cam or just regular old hydraulic lifters? with the aforementioned stock heads would i see any low end tq improvements or am i shooting myself in the foot & should just do a dual plane aluminum intake only?

First off you're crazy to ditch the FI. The engine will have oval port heads and probably the peanut port oval heads. The engine will have a flat tappet hydraulic cam, BBC's didn't get a roller cam until the Gen V engine came out.

If it was me I would leave it as is with maybe a MILD cam change. They seem run just fine as is. I wheeled all weekend with my stock 78 454 and it had more than enough power.

Oval port heads/intake and I haven't been able to find much of a head option good for our trucks.. I have a tall deck motor, the truck heads flow at very low rpms... I have a pair of 454 heads (same as your motor) I plan to port match, along with my unknown size after market rv cam already installed I plan to make plenty of power...

i would love to keep the tbi, but i want this to be a 1-2 day swap not a month long ordeal, and this is my 1st tbi motor as well as my 1st bbc,...i'm not sure what all i have to swap over and what i have to leave on to swap the tbi on, i know i would have to run a fuel return line also. can i pull the pump and float out of the 87 3+3 and it fit in my 84 tank, are they the same size hole and the locking ring the same. any good write ups on swapping to tbi in a non tbi truck? i've searched and all the tbi swaps i read about was already a 350 tbi.

It would take just as much time to swap a carburetor on correctly. I can think of no reason for you to not use the EFI.

If you don't use it send it to martin. I am tired of breathing unburn hc from his bouncing holley.

Good point. If I was you, I would definitely go carbureted, and sent all that EFI junk to me.
