I swapped in my 454 and the headers that came with the engine won't clear the frame rails. What headers have you guys found to work the best? I'm thinking some block huggers or something?

Thanks!

Good luck, I'm on the hunt for shorties for mine also (I've got a thread around here somewhere about it). The only place I found that offered some specifically for our trucks was Sanderson Headers. I plan on ordering a set, just got to save up some $$.

Thanks, Summit lists a set of Flowtech headers specificall for our app... Not CRAZY about flowtech but... Part # 11530FLT lists for 129.99... Says for a a 2wd app, but I talked with their tech guys and they said it will fit 4wd to...

Those Flowtechs show to be full length headers, I thought you were looking for shorties or the like. The Sanderson's I'm looking at are shorties.

They are, so I have my doubts... It claims they will work tho. That's why I posted on here for more info from guys who have done this before. If I end up going that route I'll be sure to let you know how it works out...lol

At this point I'm not too picky. Obvioulsy I don't would prefer something that won't meet the front driveshaft the first time I get a little off camber, but I'm not dead set on shorty's unless that's the only route I can go.
Thanks!!!

The Hedman's will work, I've used them for years. The only problem ypu;d have would be the collectors being really close to the lower end of the rear shackle on the front spring.

Have you ever kissed them or had any other issues with it while running them?

the only problem I everhad was the shackle thing but turning the bolt around (putting the bolt head close to the header) helped a lot. I never had any driveshaft issues but this was a mud truck so it didn't see a lot of heavy flex.

My truck is going to be mainly mud as well, but I would like to run some trails too. Eventually when I do a coil-over conversion I'll have a lot more flex and I suppose I can "adjust" the headers then eh?

Thanks, but I'm not sure that at this point in the project I can afford $900 for headers and expect to finish it...lol

I just put on the hooker comp headers on my BB in my 83. They fit as good as I could hope. They drivers side is cake going in, fits perfect. The passenger side you have to remove the starter and the rear part of the front driveshaft, then it goes in no problem. Both collectors cleared the shackles without issue at all (and I have the HD shackles w/ longer bolts). Hookers also have the welded collector flanges unlike many cheaper headers. I would by them again for $230.

sweet... right now there is not a starter or front driveshaft in it... That will probly be this weekend... the same time the headers go in anyway.... Are they full length I'm assuming?

Yes, full length, 3" collector. Full length is much better for performance also.

One issue that I have to take into consideration is the ceramic coating. If I understand them right, you really don't want to break in an engine while running a ceramic-coated header... Does that sound right? The reason that is an issue for me is that this is a newly built motor and is going to have to have a break in "run" on it...
Thanks for all the replies thus far!!!

i read in a thread on here, someones build thread, the k-series w/dual turbo's & he said he was planning on having all the turbo piping ceramic coated & wrapped w/insulation,..and someone made a comment about using the header wrap insulation, saying that he really wouldn't need the insulating wrap if he had his plumbing ceramic coated.

they went on to say that they had a set of headers w/the coating inside & out, and they ran cool enough they could touch the headers while engine is running, i've tried to steer clear of header & use the stock cast iron manifolds, i know they don't perform as well as headers, but i run them to keep the under hood temp as low as possible. so my question is: do the ceramic coat headers really retain the heat inside the header pipes enough that they can be touched while the engine is running? the stock exhaust manifold gets hotter than that, they get so hot you can't touch them.

so, if the ceramic coated headers stay cool enough to touch, they would probally have a cooler under hood temp than the stock manifold?. is this true? i like to keep the temperature in the exhaust gases, the hotter the exhaust stays, the more velocity the exhaust gas maintains, therefor making it flow out the tailpipe faster. at least thats what i was told by either comp cam or lunati's tech line. they said regular painted headers allow the exaust gases to cool and loose its velocity and therefor the exhaust slows down & build heat in the header and raise underhood temp, which causes a hotter air charge into the carb.

i had an red 85 2wd silverado yrs ago, and it was fine for about a yr, then after i put headers on this truck, the heat from the headers faded the paint on my hood. so again, i ask, will the ceramic coated headers retain more heat in the exhaust flow and maintain less under hood temp. than the stock cast iron manifold? i know i want inside & outside coated headers that fit an 85 k10 w/bbc. but am hesitant to order these headers until someone 2nds the opinion of the ceramic coated headers, that they do indeed run cooler than the stock cast iron manifolds...cool enough they can be touched...if they retain heat the way i've been told they do, i plan on getting my exhaust pipe coated also, to keep the heat out of the cab. i plan on buying some s/s tubing to finish out my exhaust, that way i have double the corrosion resistance, w/s/s exhaust and the ceramic coating....i wonder if they will ceramic coat the mufflers?
